"I am glad I kept reading more of Lewis's books. I love the characters in this one. The Amish ways fascinate me. This is my favorite. I do not like it when her Amish main characters consistently leave the Amish faith for the more modern Mennonite ways. It seems like a betrayal to their way of life to write every book that way. This one is different."
"Like the series of old, it doesn't have an ending per se, just a stopping point. Can be quite frustrating especially if you're used to at least a certain chapter closing in one's life. I would have to say this isn't the case with this book but it does make me want to read the next book in the series."
"The books of this series offer a glimpse into the somewhat hidden lives of the Amish. I found this first one of the Annie's People series delightful. The man character, a young woman, tries to live out the strict faith she has been taught while witnessing the steps toward "shunning" that another woman is experiencing because she resists her husband's abuse. At the same time, Anna is secretly painting pictures. It is not allowed by her family and she fears her father and the elders of the sect. Then she is attracted to a young man who is an "Englisher". Everyone who is not Amish, is called English. This book places heavy moral weight on such a young woman. Still it depicts the innocent joyfullness experienced by the faithful."
"The Preacher's Daughter, the first book in Lewis' Annie's People series, tells the story of Annie, a twenty-year-old Amish girl who loves to paint and struggles with the idea of obedience. Her father, Jesse, and mother, Barbara, want Annie to be baptized and fully embrace the Amish lifestyle. However, Annie's long-time pen-pal, Louisa, comes for a visit after leaving her fiancée at the alter and Annie's struggle is magnified. Thrown into the story are Annie's friend, Esther, and her troubled husband, Zeke, who is still traumatized by the disappearance of his younger brother, Isaac. The couple is helped by Annie's Mennonite cousins, Julia and Irvin, who also keep Annie's painting a secret.
This mash-up of people is The Preacher's Daughter greatest problem; there are so many characters that it's difficult to keep the story smooth. With every four paragraphs or so, the story switches from Annie and Louisa to being about Esther and Zeke and so on down the list of characters. The characters are interconnected because they are Amish or are/like family, but that doesn't mean this connection makes the story perfectly connected.
Even so, I still couldn't put The Preacher's Daughter down and I rushed to the library as soon as I finished the novel to pick up its sequel, The Englisher. The story has this mystery to it, this constant struggle that seeps into you and makes you want to read more. I just wish the book had focused more on Annie and give Esther and Zeke their dues later in their book."
