About this title: Jan Karon prepares to leave Mitford with the ninth and final installment in her bestselling series of Christian fiction. Having spent a year farm-sitting for some friends, retired but restless Father Timothy Kavanagh returns to work, bringing a long-closed, tiny mission church in the mountains back to life. Although Jan Karon wraps up her Mitford series with this volume, devoted readers will be glad to know that they have not seen the last of Father Tim; Karon plans a new Father Tim series, set in his home town of Holly Springs, Mississippi.

"I forgot how much I love Father Tim and Cynthia (and Dooley and Uncle Billy and Aunt Rose and all the other characters). I listened to this on tape and felt like I was among old friends once again. A breath of fresh air, but sad to know this is the last book in the Mitford series. Definitely recommend it."
"Reading through the Mitford series in random order this time according to availability. If you haven't read any, start at the beginning because there are so many characters that evolve. Cozy reading, faith meets daily life, small town intimacy, scriptural references affirm my convictions."
"I have enjoyed immensely Jan Karon's Mitford series. A cozier collection of everyday, inspiring heroes I have yet to find between the covers of a book. The series is easy to read, the characters feel real and easy to relate to. I enjoyed this last book in the series as well but once I finished the book I wasn't sure that it could really be called a finale. Everything seemed sewn up too abruptly. The book ended and I felt like I was still in the middle of the action and wasn't exactly sure what had happened that the author felt justified in wrapping it up at that moment. But as I've had a little time to think about it I think it may have been just the right sort of ending. One long-held prayer is answered with a resounding yes it seems. But how it happened or what will happen next is completely up in the air. Kind of like life."
Father Tim and Cynthia are at Meadowgate Farm for a year while Hal and Marge Owen are away. Puny delivers her 2nd set of twins, Timothy and Thomas. Uncle Billy needs medial attention. Miss Rose is perhaps as fearsome as ever. Hope Winchester is engaged. Dooley is seeing Lace Turner, both of whom are in college. Nurse Betty has her hands full. Miss Louella remembers that Miss Sadie stashed money away in her old car which is now part of Andrew's property since Andrew had earlier purchased Miss Sadie's estate.
Father Tim is disgusted with himself and is determined to do something in ministry with or without God's leading. He's having a difficult time being still and knowing that God is God. Bishop Stuart invites Father Tim to be a vicar at a small church not far from Meadowgate. Father Tim becomes fast friends with the elderly, spirited, intelligent Agnus from the church who introduces herself to him after she hears the church bell ringing which brings her to the church. She introduces him to her son, Clarence and others in the community -- Sissy, Dovey, Donnie, Juble and others. We meet the Flower girls in this book as well as many others country folk. Father Tim visits the Mitford-ites on occasion but he's mostly in the more rural setting of Meadowgate and it's surroundings.
Some characters from earlier Mitford books are now dead - Miss Sadie, Russell Jacks, and Absalom Greer. Some new sorrows confront Mitford lovers in this one.
After reading and/or listening to all nine books and having visited different settings and meeting many different characters in this series, I have to say that my friends in Mitford are my favorite."
