"This was an absolutely riveting book. I'm a big Beatles fan, but I didn't know too much of the band's backstory (except that which has evolved into legend), so this was a bit of an eye-opener. John, creative genius that he was, could be an incredibly cruel man, and while I'm sure Cynthia wasn't entirely the innocent she claims to be in the book, I now understand where the public's animosity towards Yoko Ono comes from. Holy homewrecker. Part pop culture history, part romance and part tragedy, I highly recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest interest in the Beatles."
"What I least expected was to find one of my idols falling off his pedestal, but Cynthia Lennon manages to nudge him gently, without any real bitterness. She writes with equal parts humility and an uncompromised respect for her former husband, and because of this, you get the sense that not only is she a class act, but that John clearly wasn't himself when he made the choice to leave her. The last couple lines really impressed me, almost knocked the breath out of me. I suddenly understood all the pain and anger she'd been so careful not to reveal.
A good read, quite engrossing, and you won't be able to think kindly about Yoko after you finish, but you'll still find yourself loving John. Just like Cynthia wants you to."
"Cynthia Lennon offers a very interesting, different, and probably very true perspective of John Lennon. She tells his story while also telling her story and the story of their son, Julian.
The book contains many tidbits of John and the other Beatles. Cynthia tells of John's brilliance without glossing over the demons that he battled - demons that hurt many, but most specifically hurt Cynthia and Julian. Strangely, though, it sounds like Cynthia and Julian could have gotten past the hurt that John left them had they been taken care of monetarily, which Yoko ensured would not happen.
I finished this book with a heart wounded for all that John lost and for all the pain that Cynthia and Julian continue to carry."
"I really wanted to like Cynthia Lennon. Being a guy, I never had the knee-jerk reaction of female Beatlemaniacs who wanted to hate her for the audacity of 'trapping' one of the Fab Four and taking him out of circulation. But because of the Beatles management's policy of making Cynthia a non-person for so many years, I never knew very much about her. Enter the biography. I was totally sympathetic to her plight as the 'forgotten Beatle wife', and was fascinated by her insight into the relationship between Aunt Mimi's behavior and John's. Her tale of drug use, and the way that it affected not only Lennon's psyche, but the cohesivenes of the Beatles was not new ground, but had new insights. The insight into the way that John tried to bully the others in the early going, only to be bullied back by McCartney in the later years of the Beatles was also not new ground, but interesting. I felt like the book came off the track when she began telling the story of John and Yoko. All of her anger and frustration at Yoko for co-authoring ("It takes two to tango...") the destruction of her marriage to John, and then Yoko's machinations in turning John away from his first family makr the latter part of this book less factual and more tabloid-like. I am not denying the feelings, or the reasons for them, I am just saying that if you are writing a book you want to stay just a bit more detached and objective. The temptation to trash Yoko, (again probably much-deserved), has to be weighed against the fact that Cynthia is the only one who can truly tell her story. Yoko does not seem likely to write an apologetic rendition."
