"This was a great introduction to traveling to the moon for my daughter's preschool class. I really liked how it put the child right in the astronaut's seat - drawing on their imagination, but also giving them a lot of facts. Great combination. The illustrations were beautiful and comptelely engaging."
Not sure if someone's mentioned this or not, but when I read "If You Decide to Go to the Moon," I could not help comparing it to Meghan McCarthy's "Astronaut Handbook" (June 2008), which I read previously. I will say that with all of the far-away pictures of the moon done by Kellogg, I felt like I could reach out and touch it. It was like being on a clear night and the moon not seeming that far away... Kellogg was able to reproduce that emotion in me.
However, McNulty's text pales in comparison to McCarthy's. I do not have issue with the idea of children going to outer space as both of these authors have done with their subject. The problem seems to be something about McNulty's use of "you" and the imagined trip "you" would take. Now that I'm thinking about it again, it's not even the fact that she uses "you" that bothers me. It's something about her tone that doesn't work for me. Take for example, "but you'll bounce very lightly and find it a lot of fun." Or, "you are suddenly terribly homesick." I'm okay with McNulty telling me that I'll burn up in the sunlit part of the moon if I didn't have a spacesuit on (athough she fails to mention the lack of oxygen might also be an issue), but I don't want her telling me how I'm going to feel or what I'll find fun.
It seems that McNulty is trying to create a sense of intimacy with the reader, to allow some vicarious living in order to make the topic "come alive." But in doing so, in the way in which she tries to do it, it backfires for me and I'm turned off. I want the details, the facts, the goods--not the warm-and-fuzzies.
McCarthy also uses second-person in "The Astronaut's Handbook" to tell her story, but she doesn't tell me how to feel. Her illustrations are labeled and she explains some of the quirkier aspects of space travel (bread, using the bathroom, etc.). I don't feel like I'm being talked down to. Also, the rocket is not in my backyard. McCarthy speaks to the serious preparation astronauts take in order to travel in space. It's nice to imagine one's self taking a trip to space, but at least she gives us the courtesy to tell us what you actually need to do."
