"A superb new drama written by John Patrick Shanley. It is an inspired study in moral uncertainty with the compellingly certain structure of an old-fashioned detective drama. Even as "Doubt" holds your conscious attention as an intelligently measured debate play, it sends off stealth charges that go deeper emotionally. One of the year's ten best."-Ben Brantley, "The New York Times"
"[The] #1 show of the year. How splendid it feels to be trusted with such passionate, exquisite ambiguity unlike anything we have seen from this prolific playwright so far. Blunt yet subtle, manipulative but ...

"During our moving frenzy a few months ago, I sat down one night while Eddie was working and watched Doubt on pay per view. Well, at least I tried to watch it. But I fell asleep within the first fifteen minutes. But it's been on my reading list for a while, so last week while we were on our Shakespeare festival trip, I read Doubt. I remember listening to a Fresh Air interview a few months ago with Phillip Seymour Hoffman about his acting in the film version, and it made the play sound so interesting and engrossing. Once again, it just didn't grip me. Maybe it was the contrast of watching a really fantastic stage performance of Comedy of Errors with the slim spareness of the script. Maybe if watching Hoffman and Adams and Streep bring it to life would change my opinion. But I have a feeling I'd have to tackle it at a time when I'm not moving and exhausted."
"Well I sunk to an all time low. I sat in B&N today and read this entire play. It wasn't that long; only around 60 pages. At least I bought 4 other books.
Doubt makes you question what you think is true. I recognized myself in some of the passages of this book. In the introduction, the author asks if there has ever been a time when you've argued a point to the point when you question yourself. Do you become blinded by your own convictions?
The play revolved around two nuns, a priest and a young black boy in the 1960's. It confronts issues of homosexuality, racism and sexual abuse in the Catholic church. Central to all these themes is individual biases and the role of gossip. How often do we interpret things through our own preconceived notions, then influence others with our beliefs? And how are we swayed by the influence of others? This story is thought provoking and powerful. I liked the sermons, especially the one comparing gossip to feathers in the wind. Once they spread, it's impossible to gather them all back up and you don't know where they'll land and how far they'll reach.
This is a quick must-read. Now, I must check out the movie!"
"One of the best pieces of writing I've read this year. This play has the concision of a perfectly made short story; every word of dialogue, every detail, is essential, subtle. The three characters couldn't have been more finely drawn, by which I mean: they're utterly complex, mysterious to the final words of the play. An outstanding, humbling, inspiring piece of writing."
"It's been a very long time since I've been made to think that much about what I've just read. Powerful? Very. Moments of amusement, for me, came in the sermons. How simply such lessons are presented (example: the feathers as gossip). Heartbreaking was the moment with Mrs. Muller, where not only do you find out her husband beats their son, but that the son is gay. Only, for me, that wasn't what was heartbreaking: it was that Mrs. Muller accepted what she had been given, worked with it, and seemed to find abuse by the hands of a priest a better fate for her son because it was only until the end of the school year. Thinking about it, I see the logic in it and she was right. Sadly, right.
Do I think he did it? No. I had no doubt until the scene in the office, when confronted again. My doubt grew, why wouldn't he want anyone to call a past parish? But then, as I thought about it...who in that type of argument wouldn't become emotional? He was in a fight he couldn't win because she just wouldn't budge and there was nothing he could do to change that. To me, not guilt, just an impossible situation.
So now I've read the play, seen the play on stage, and seen the movie. Mind numbingly powerful."
