"The Colorado Kid is a fast read. I have had the book for about a month now and I have managed to read it in two days 60 on the first and 120 on the second about a month later. The entire story flies by perhaps due to the small formatted pages, or just because of Kings usual rapid pace style. The book is essentially an unsolved mystery surrounding a murder in Maine, told entirely by two senior newspaper men of The Weekly Islander to their new young female protege. The story presents the case, plain and simple, and allows you as the reader to make up your own mind about it whatever the case may be. This book was a thought provoking yet fast ride, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light, enjoyable, read, and a mystery for the mind to chew on."
"A sad, quietly edgy novella. Two aging newspapermen (off the coast of Maine, naturally) tell their young intern the story of a dead body found on the beach 25 years ago, and the weird, unsatisfying investigation.
Pretty, and full of the Maine accents and manners King has single-handedly endeared to the rest of America. It's a story about when there's not a story, no "through line," as one of the characters puts it. A story about how to take a mystery with no answer and fit it onto the page. It's a bit too pointedly meta about the whole thing, but it's a lovely little read for a cold fall day anyway."
"200 or so pages should have been under 50. The idea, that life doesn't have the pat answers of a story, is OK. The 3 characters are OK, but he took way too many words to say it. Typical & why I quit reading him years ago.
His repetitive, bland descriptions do not dig me deeper into the world he is painting, they just bore me to tears. I was hoping for something different, more like his old style, out of a book by this publisher. Didn't get it.
If you haven't read it, don't bother. It's a waste of time & money."
"I was supposed to be watching recorded episodes of Project Runway Australia with my girlfriend tonight, but I started reading The Colorado Kid during a break and found it hard to put down. I forcibly held off reading the last two chapters in order to score some brownie points, but in the end I got to finish the book (she went to bed).
It is definitely a love it or hate it story. I'm a little surprised I liked it as much as I did since I've never really been heavily into the crime/mystery genre. The love it or hate it part comes down to how you feel about the ending. But, as much as I knew what was going to happen, I still managed to convince myself that maybe it would go down another way. It was such an intense driving force that my dinner (nachos) went soggy. Stephen King, you owe me crispy nachos.
I'm definitely going to check out some more stuff by this publisher. Hopefully their other titles are at least half as engaging as The Colorado Kid."
