"This is a beautiful and simple interview of then-Cardinal Ratzinger by Peter Seewald. Pope Benedict answers with his characteristic simplicity and depth. A line that has stuck with me since I read this ten years ago is this answer after being asked how many ways to God there were: "As many as there are people. For even within the same faith each man's way is an entirely personal one."
This is a very accessible book that I highly recommend."
"The first I read of Ratzinger, which I picked up when I was considering conversion to Catholicism. I never, ever thought then that I was reading about the next Pope."
"I wish I'd read this when it first came out over ten years ago, although of course I'm just giving another beggar a horse.
A very accessible peak inside the mind and heart of Benedict XVI when John Paul II was still the leader of the Catholic Church and we were all still contemplating the new millennium. Even so, the relevancy of the material has not been overcome by events because the then-Cardinal speaks about Truth which is timeless.
Neatly divided into three sections -- Biography, problems of the Catholic Church and On the Threshold of a New Era -- Salt of the Earth is an informal interview conducted by a self-admitted prodigal son of that same church, the author, Peter Seewald. SotE is written in question/answer format, which inevitably reflects the agenda of the author but also the depth of belief and character of the man he is interviewing. Numerous times I saw how Seewald tried to force the conversation in a particular direction without success. And yet, Cardinal Ratzinger's answers were always kind, erudite, insightful and convincing. It's not possible to tell from a book if he became frustrated at times, but it does not seem so. In fact, the author himself says in the foreword, 'The Cardinal never asked me about my past or my current status. He didn't want to look at any of the questions beforehand, nor did he request that anything be omitted or added. The atmosphere of our meeting was intense and serious, but sometimes this "prince of the Church" sat so casually on his chair, one foot on the crossbar, that you might have thought you were talking to a student. Once he interrupted the conversation to retire for a meditation, or maybe to ask the Holy Spirit for the right words. I don't know.'
'Once' he interrupted? In 283 pages of questions and answers? That speaks volumes in itself, to me at least. It bespeaks a man who knows what he believes, or rather Who he believes in.
Excellent book and beginner's resource!
Just a few of my favorite quotes:
'Dealing with God every day is a necessity for me.' (In response to the question, Isn't it extremely wearing having to deal with God every day? (p.11)
'I never imagined that I could, so to speak, redirect the rudder of history. And if our Lord himself ends up on the Cross, one sees that God's ways do not lead immediately to measurable successes.' (p.15)
'At the very moment when you think you possess yourself and defend yourself, precisely then you ruin yourself. Because you are not built as an island whose only foundation is itself. Rather you are built for love, and therefore for giving, for renunciation, for the pruning of yourself. Only if you give of yourself, if you lose yourself, as Christ puts it, will you be able to live.' (p.168)
'Redemption is thus never imposed from the outside or cemented by firm structures but is held in the fragile vessel of human freedom.' (p.219)
'. . . the Church can be contemporary by being anti-contemporary, by setting herself against what everybody says.' (p.241)
'At the moment we are busy with the implementation of the Second Vatican Council.' (p.253)
'The Church . . . cannot give the world any orders, but in the world's helplessness she can hold the answers ready.' (p.272)"
