Having revived the radio variety program with A Prairie Home Companion Garrison Keillor turned to broadcasting poetry in the daily short feature The Writer's Almanac. "The book that got me to read poetry books. I'd also been able to read a poem or two, but never able to actually read poetry books (well, I guess I read Ginsberg a fair amount in early middle school). For some reason this book, which, although the poems are great, isn't particularly helpful in hard times, got me reading poetry, one poem after another. Thanks!"
"Another favorite, and oh wait, another one about old love. what is wrong with me? I like american authors who write about the west or frontier a lot, so this fits my style."
"Alright, I finished...after just randomly opening it up and reading a poem or two here & there...I then sat down and went through for missing ones and to reread faves (Happiness, A Dialogue of Watching, The Happiest Day, Toast, Wedding Poem For Schele and Phil, To a Frustrated Poet, Ordinary Life, (2nd) Happiness, The Benefits of Ignorance...OK enough of naming just about every other poem and only being halfway through.
BUY/BEG/BORROW/STEAL this book. Oh, and I think the title should just be: Good Poems for Any Old Time.
Definitely a book to carry through life with you.
------------- I'm not very far in at all, just the intro and the first few poems while leaning in a corner at Borders. What I did read inspired me to buy the lot...(Surprise! Surprise friends! A good handful of you will be getting this for any upcoming occasions. :) )...because Keillor touches on that which is so to-the-point about poetry. It doesn't need to be fussy or full of grandeur, it just needs to be honest and bare and naked...and what a rare occurence that is in our age of diluted, calculated messaging: be it corporate media, twittering, or Goodreads reviews espousing sometime desirous of 'being more'.
So why should you buy/read this?
Because poetry is the ambrosia of life and sometimes we all need to drink in the beautiful Truth of Man's most honest words, and remember: we're not alone."
