"I recently finished reading this book and I've been listening to Dan's podcast religiously. I think he's one of the most reasonable and candid writers/sex columnist. His take on the issue was something we sometimes tend to forget which is the reality of it. It's exciting when it's planning a wedding but what happens after? Who are the people that will most likely be affected? Gay marriage is a very significant issue right now and it should be legal. I came to that conclusion after reading this book.
His overall take on the issue and questions he asked were valid. There was this one quote that really got stuck in my head and quite ironic. It was coming from James Dobson, anti-gay conservative leader.
"Don't marry the person you think you can live with; marry only the individual you think you can't live without""
"As the hoopla over gay marriage abounds in the United States and with Canada legalizes gay marriage, Dan and Terry wonder if they should tie the knot. And really, is marriage necessary to a family that has already proved itself to be a solid unit?
Again, Savage make many good points about marriage, pro and con, as he and his boyfriend Terry frantically wonder if living in sin is harming their son in anyway. Quoting pop culture sources as well as ancient texts such as the Bible, Savage traces marriage throughout it's different incarnations and forms, and whether or not tying the knot is really all that important."
"Since I have such a bad memory for names, I really hate books with more than a handful of important characters. Since Dan Savage writes so much about his large Catholic family, he mentions dozens and dozens of names that keep coming back up. It's aggravating. But it's not his fault, either. What is his fault though is the length of his digressions. I don't mind stories that meander as long as you don't lose sight of the point. I think that Savage gets a little caught up in himself here (not particularly difficult for memoirists, I know, but still a trap to watch out for).
He's still funny, but he seems to have lost his touch. Or maybe I just prefer reading his sex advice."
"I found this book as I was checking it in at the library where I work. It was an interesting read from a totally different perspective than I would normally choose. I found it a bit too foul-mouthed at times and I definitely did not agree with the author's basic beliefs/choices. But he wrote well and argued pretty effectively some of the problems with the gay marriage debate. While my beliefs will never change about homosexuality due to my Christian faith, I found much of what he said thought-provoking, well-written and well-thought out. Not a book I would recommend to most or one that I would read again....but it can be good to read books about the opinions of others once in awhile."
