"Synopsis: Set at the start of the 2001 war in Afghanistan Nusrat, an American-Muslim teacher in Pakistan is waiting for word of her husband Faiz, a doctor who is working in refugee clinics in Afghanistan. Hundreds of miles away a poor Afghani girl named Najmah, has lost her brother and father to Taliban conscription gangs. Left alone to take care of her pregnant mother Najmah attempts to protect her father's land and flocks from the greedy eyes of her Uncle, a Taliban sympathizer. After American bombs destroy Najmah's village and kill her mother, Najmah is found by a neighbor's brother and his family and smuggled across the border into Pakistan, there Najmah and Nusrat's paths intersect after the refugee director enrolls Najmah in Nusrats school.
Review: Nusrat and Najmah's voices are achingly clear and beautifully crafted. Staples' description and prose bring these two vastly different characters to light and create a wonderful opportunity for the reader see from the perspectives of characters which have remained un-seen from the news reels. I was impressed by the depth of understanding Staple displayed when she wrote about Muslim identity and the fierce pride that is inherent to the tribal people of the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan and the Pashtun people of both Afghanistan & Pakistan."
"This book takes place primarily in Afghanistan (post-September 11th, 2001) and attempts to show how things occurred from the Afghani point of view...
*Spoiler alert*
The plot follows two main characters: Najmah, a young shepherd, left to fend for herself due to a series of events (her brother and father are taken to fight on the side of the Taliban, and her mother and baby brother are killed during a series of air strikes); Nusrat, an American schoolteacher who has moved to Afghanistan with her doctor husband to help in any way they can.
I thought the was quite book meticulously planned - I've read this author previously and she's very deliberate in her details and when trying to create impressions in the minds of her readers. The downside is that her characters feel more like two-dimensional stock, rather than living and breathing people. In other words, it's a bit too easy and convenient in several scenes to predict what events will occur or which interactions will take place - this isn't *bad* necessarily, but it did mean that I felt I could figure out what the outcome of the book would be.
Still, I must give the author full credit for writing about events and places that are not normally found in young adult fiction. Even if the book didn't satisfy me 100%, I think it's great that she seeks to shed some light in this area and one can certainly appreciate the effort made..."
"This book is the story of two women who meet in Peshawar, Pakistan in 2001. Najmah is a girl who travels to Peshwar to find her father and brother taken to fight with the Taliban after her mother and brother are killed in an air raid. Nusrat is an American who married an Afghan doctor, now missing. While those stories alone would make a good read, I enjoyed even more the journey Nusrat took to discovering Islam and then an even larger view of faith and reconciling science and faith.
"Islam showed me what I was already coming to believe: that science and mathematics do not so much explain the universe as describe it. And with all that we know, there is still plenty of room for magic and mystery. If I'd been open to it, Christianity; might have taught me the same things."
"Under the Persimmon Tree is and adventure book by Suzanne Fisher Staples. It is about a girl named Najmah who is a young Afghan girl. Her name means "star,". After her father and older brother are conscripted by the Taliban and her mother and newborn brother are killed in an air raid she finds herself alone and she goes to Pakistan. Elaine, whose Islamic name is Nusrat is also on her own. Her husband went to Mazar to help the men and women engird from the air strikes. The two main charters lead parole lives that come together when they meet up in Peshawar. In the end Najamh's brother finds her and tells her that it was their fathers wish that she returns to family home.
Text To Text Connection. In the book Dominate 1 Grubbes Grady Lost his Mom Dad and Sister when they were murdered by 4 demons. This made me think that Grubbs and Najmah probably felt the same because Najmah also lost her mom dad and brother. I wonder how it feels to lose some one that you love so dearly.
I would recommend this book to every one because it was really interesting and it will keep you at the edge of your seat the whole book. It was also very educational. I would give this book 5 stars."
