"Sure, he is writing in the needlessly crazy French academic style, but it is well worth it if only for gems like "the social does not explain, the social must be explained.""
"I'm not yet sure that I can adequately evaluate actor-network-theory (ANT), though at this point, I definitely find it appealing. I took a fieldwork methods course last quarter, and kept raising questions about how to incorporate material objects into ethnographic work, but no one really had any good ideas about it. Latour helps illustrate one way in which we can create a social science that is able to account for the very real experience we have of physical, non-human objects shaping us and the way we interact with other humans. ANT also helps develop a vocabulary that recognizes the 'social construction' of things without denying them their 'objectivity,' as well as a theory of action and agency that navigates the pitfalls of both material and social determinism, without banishing either from the realm of that which must be accounted for in social-scientific descriptions of the world. Latour's wit and humor also made this an enjoyable read, which was quite a feat, I think, for a treatise on social theory and method."
"Wahhoo. Finished at last. The most readable of the Latour books this semester. Or is it that I have actually learned something by struggling through all the other texts, articles, the Heiddegger, et al? Nah, it really is easier than the others.
Seriously, I think this one is the one to start with, especially if one is *not* trained in the social sciences or are not completely aware of the factions within different disciplines in anthropology or sociology. (Some awareness of the Science wars, of course, just makes this more compelling reading.)
ANT is truly awesome, and something that I think many people (particularly designers) are beginning to do instinctively. I look forward to uncovering more about material cultures (studies in) and how this all intersects/interacts.."
