About this title: In 1935, with a doctorate in art history and no prospect of a job, the 26-year-old Ernst Gombrich was invited to attempt a history of the world for younger readers. Amazingly, he completed the task in an intense six weeks, and "Eine kurze Weltgeschichte fur junge Leser" was published in Vienna to immediate success, and is now available in twenty-five languages across the world. In forty concise chapters, Gombrich tells the story of man from the stone age to the atomic bomb. In between emerges a colourful picture of wars and conquests, grand works of art, and the spread and limitations of ...

"I love the idea of a book that can provide a comprehensive overview of something very complex. In this case, Gombrich aims to explain the history of the world starting with the origins of human life. While he focuses very much on Western civilization (only one chapter on the Americas and maybe two on the history of the Far East), it's great for what it is. This book was originally written as a children's history of the world. This doesn't make it any less interesting for adults! It was a great memory-jog for all those things you learned in high school and college but have since long forgotten. Bonus points to Gombrich for offering us a Marxist perspective of the rise of capitalism and colonialism, rather than the expected Enlightenment discourse of progress (although he does backpedal in the final chapter, a revision from his original edition)."
"This popular book has been around for many years in over a dozen languages but it has only recently been translated to English. (The reason why is explained in the preface.) Mr. Gombrich originally published this book in Vienna in 1936. It is written for a younger audience which results in a clear, engaging narrative. There are 40 short chapters which include sections on: Ancient Greece and Egypt, the Roman Empire, Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Jesus, Mohammed, the Middle Ages, the Crusades, Charlemagne, Martin Luther, Napoleon, and so forth up to World War I. Then in the final chapter, the author talks about his experiences during World War II and his hopes for peace. It is a fascinating book, covers a lot of ground, and made many areas of history much clearer for me to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone curious about world history."
"This book was written by an Austrian author (I actually bought it in Europe for the plane ride home). Gombrich thought there weren't enough history books that described history in non-academic language that anyone, including children, could enjoy. The result of his labor of love is a readable account of history that I would recommend to anyone who (like me) would like to learn more about history without feeling like devouring a scholarly (and pretentious) text. This is a book that I would read again and would share with a future generation. Also great to read aloud. This author also wrote a history of art book which I am drooling over that is readable, informative and I would recommend. Just can't afford it quite yet."
"I think this was an interesting book. Quite a bit of it was simplified (it was written as a children's history book), and some of it a bit off, though it was interesting to get the viewpoint of important historical events from a European's viewpoint (the author is from Germany and the book was originally written in German in 1935). It is also cool to get the short sweeping view of history that kind of puts things into perspective on when they happened rather than isolated facts and events."
