"I'd like to have given this 3.5 stars, but won't go so low as 3, because smokers should read this. My 2 issues with this book, aside from all the repetition, which I believe is unfortunately necessary to do the reverse brainwashing, is that 1. he insists nobody enjoys the taste of cigarettes (not true, I DO like the way certain cigarettes taste... though, admittedly, not the ones I was smoking regularly and not ones I can easily get in the States anymore), and 2. he insists that you have to work to enjoy smoking because it is so distasteful and difficult to begin with (i.e. choking, coughing, nasty taste, etc.). Also not true. I loved cigarettes from the minute I had my first one, and I didn't choke, cough, find the smell or taste bothersome, etc. I just loved the feeling of being a teeny bit high coupled with the sense of everything coming into sharp relief. i.e. I am very susceptible to nicotine addiction, apparently!
I have quit smoking at least half a dozen times in 21 years, but never for more than 11 months at a stretch, and never without severe anxiety, depression, nightmares, super-bitchiness, and indigestion, as well as brain fog. I wonder how much of that is the mental/psychological brainwashing about being an "addictive personality", etc. His book did get me to think about quitting differently, not as giving something up but as getting free. So it will be interesting to see if I stay quit this time.
I found this at the thrift shop and paid $1 for it... was already feeling like stopping smoking when I began reading it yesterday (turns out I was already sick with a chest cold or flu that has got me home today). Haven't smoked in about 30 hours, and have no desire to. So we'll see.
The book is worth reading if you are tired of quitting and starting again. Might get you to see things differently this time around."
"The book isn't perfect. Carr annoyed me at the beginning of the book by tooting his own horn; he obviously felt the need to prove he has credentials--and that makes sense, but there's too much.
But what makes the book amazing is that it systematically breaks down the myths about smoking (even the ones that I didn't think I subscribed to) and subtly sort of brainwashes you into hating smoking. You smoke as you read, which keeps the pressure off. And Carr's thinking is rational--and friendly. He doesn't condescend or use (many) scare tactics. Some of what he says is a little silly ("Now you can think, 'Yippee, I'm a non-smoker!'"), but that's okay. Sometimes you can see the wheels turning, but that doesn't detract from the book's effectiveness either.
His central idea is that quitting smoking isn't difficult as long as you don't see it as a sacrifice--perception is important. You aren't giving anything up; instead, you're freeing yourself from drug addiction.
The book really helped me feel ready to smoke that final cigarette and quit. I don't know for absolutely certain that I will never smoke again (although I hope I don't), but I feel better having his book to re-read whenever I need to."
"the first time i read this book, it enabled me to stop smoking cigarettes for a year. this was such an amazing blessing that this in itself deserves more than five stars.
this books explains numerous things about smoking that many smokers do not know or understand, and that they all should know. in particular, it explains the core reason why some of us find it so incredibly difficult to quit. i wont go into the details here, because if you are interested, you really should read the book. seriously! buy it! you wont regret it.
i read it again recently. the message still held, but it wasnt enough on its own this time. but i was able to quit on the next try. my feeling now is that there are some reasons that people have for smoking that this book will not cure on its own. i found one, in me, and engaging myself on that front in combination with what i had previously learned from carr, i was able to stop again. i couldnt have done it without having recently read this book again."
"I do not enjoy smoking. I hate smoking and the cigarette itself is what's making me miserable. I'm tired of feeding the monster. If I were a non-smoker I wouldn't feel cravings and would enjoy moments in life more. These are the things I've learned so far. I can understand why this book makes people want to quit smoking. It's not shock therapy which scares you into quitting. It explains all the good things that will happen to you when you quit, and while you think you like smoking or that it helps you in some way you find out that you don't and it doesn't. It really makes stressful situations more stressful, and so on. It's not hard to quit, it's easy. The book makes you realize that smoking is very unenjoyable. And makes me wonder why I ever thought it was. I am so looking forward to finishing this book and quitting smoking and being freed from the monster. I am also excited to make other people I know who smoke read it. I'm shocked they haven't already."
