About this title: H.P. Lovecraft reinvented the horror genre for the 20th century, discarding witches and ghosts and envisaging mankind as an outpost of dwindling sanity in a chaotic and malevolent universe.

"H.P. Lovecraft's stories eventually gave me the night horrors when I was in my 20s. Woke up screaming just about every night. My brother was reading them as well and sometimes we'd have the same dream and wake each other up.
Will probably not read them again. He tapped into something that doesn't seem horrifying while you're reading it, but when your brain has time to process it, holy hell breaks loose.
"So much tentacley goodness comes from these stories. And yet there is so much distance in Lovecraft's writing and his plotting is so awkward and halting that I was left flat. How many times do you have to read some variation of "It was too horrible to describe" before you get bored? And why is the narrator always a partner or observer or second hand researcher? Why remove us from the creeping horror?"
"An amazing collection of short stories by one of the pioneers of a science fiction/horror genre; HP Lovecraft. It features the story of the greatest of the Great Old Ones: Call of Cthulhu. Other stories are the Outsider, The Colour Out of Space, The Rats in the Walls, and many more."
"Just finished "Herbert West-Re-Animator" and looking forward to further tales of the macabre. Everything I wanted it to be: funny, feverish, intense.
2.1.09
Rare is the story that can make me visibly shiver in the bright hot sun, but dang if Lovecraft didn't deliver with the final story in this wonderful collection, "The Haunter of the Dark". Having finally gotten around to reading the master (after being scared off at an impressionable age by cover art that looked to be something out of "Creepshow"), all I can say now is....what took me so long? Perhaps I had to go through the inevitable college-age belief that everything I read must be IMPORTANT, perhaps it was a backlash against my pubescent indulgence of all things Stephen King. What remains is a fantastical (in the true sense of the word, or 'terrific') realization of the deepest fears that lurk in the heart of even the sunniest of human dispositions.
I will always be drawn to the dark, and it is good to know that there is still worthwhile art out there devoted to the exact description of the architecture of the terrible unknown. For I could really care less about serial killers and slasher films and torture porn. What truly scares me is Nature, which includes Human Nature, and our brushes against the unknowable, all-powerful Natural World.
Way to go, Creepmaster of Providence! I think I'll go read some John Updike (r.i.p.) now."
