"My rating needs an explanation. I wasn't sure whether to give this book a three or a five. On the one hand, it was beautifully written and the subject matter was moving. Yet, I couldn't get over the fact that this was supposedly the diary of an ex-Nazi propagandist (which the writer herself fails to mention).
That brought into question the nature of what I was reading - was this woman truly SO victimized, as she wrote in her "diary" - or did she have some political agenda?
Yet, there were so many episodes she couldn't have invented. Her emotions were too raw, the superficial feel of the narrative (as a result of trying to distance herself from the events) too real. And, as jew, I couldn't quite brush aside the fact that she was a Nazi.
So:
Three because I was uncomfortable with the disregard for the Holocaust, and because I felt cheated by the possibility of this being propaganda.
Five because the writing was powerful without being over-the-top, and the story was an illuminating picture of post-war Germany.
So I just settled in the middle and gave it a four."
"This is one the best WW2 firsthand accounts written by a German woman I have ever read (sorry for the run-on sentence). I could not put this book down.
It is the fascinating account of the last days of Berlin under the Third Reich, as well as when the Russians conquered the city. The anonymous author kept a journal of her experiences from which this book was later derived. I was stunned by the number of rapes committed by the Russians upon the German women and girls--I had no idea. I was also stunned and impressed by the survival instincts of the average female German civilian during this time.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about the daily life of German civilians (particularly the women) during the Third Reich/WWII."
"One of the most (rightly so) disturbing books I have read in a long time.
Berlin 1945, as the Soviet troops approach, arrive, move on. This is what happens, and this why war never clears up the mess it was meant to do, because it creates a worst one in the process. What happens to the human psyche when its sole job is to kill and keep killing until told to stop? What happens to our sense of self, of normaility, when all our resources are focussed on destruction?
I in 4 woman raped in the whole city. Not just one-off rapes either: multiple rapes, gang-rapes and over stretches of time.
And this journalist could keep body and soul together sufficiently to record what was happening to her and the people around her.
One of the most telling details was when her companion returned from the war and she gave this diary to read. He pretended not to understand the writing. Someone asked if if this what 'their boys' were also doing in the war. No, they agreed, our boys just wouldn't. So heartbtreaking: wouldn't they, indeed? Or would they do something unbelievably worse? Under orders, of course. How far outside of Berlin was Bergen-Belsen? An hours' drive?"
"One of the best books I have read in a long time. I cannot get it out of my head. So many things to think about after having read it. I am surprised by how similar we Americans today are in our thinking and view of the world to the Germans of Hitler's time.
Do we not see ourselves as superior to those living in third world countries or the illegal aliens? Do we not hold up our inventions and the law and order of our society as examples of how evolved we are? The woman in the story felt those things of her community too, she was overwhelmingly horrifed when she learned of how those aspects of her culutre were used by other Germans to exterminate the Jews.
Just one of the thoughts that went through my head while reading this book. It is a must read."
