"A fascinating look at the Apollo program. The author goes on a mission to talk to the 9 surviving "Moonwalkers," the select group of men who landed on the moon. It's really interesting to see how these men dealt so differently with the aftermath of their experiences."
"Of the 12 men who walked on the moon, only 9 remain. Smith sets out to interview them all in search of a deeper meaning beyond 'What was it like up there?'
'How do you cope with literally coming back to Earth?' and 'How did it change you?' are the main drives of this fascinating book, but there is also plenty of background - technical, political and personal - which adds depth and context to each man's story.
Despite dragging in a few places this book was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to those looking to fill in some of the gaps in their knowledge of the Apollo missions and more importantly those who manned them ."
"I didn't specifically choose to read this right about the time of the 40th anniversary of the first man to walk on the moon - it just worked out that way.
It was fascinating to read the experiences of those who walked on the moon as well as those close to them - I didn't expect to be quite so taken by the stories of the wives and children of those involved but I was.
This would have been a 5-star read but to be honest I thought in some cases the author got slightly bogged down in trying to recreate the feelings of the public around the times of the landings and the political and social climates of the time...sure, I think these things were important to set the stage, but in several cases I found myself thinking 'ok, can we get on with the people I want to be reading about, please'.
Very interesting how the experience impacted different astronauts so differently and what diverse routes they each took afterwards."
"This book does a great job of addressing the questions I'd like asked of the astronauts, even though they aren't always willing to answer. What was it like to be there? How did it change them? The author was a child during the moon landings and only recently began to think about them again. He manages to contact most (all?) of the remaining astronauts and he seems very perceptive about them. I thoroughly enjoyed finding out what became of the astronauts and what they are thinking."
