"Astonishing, heartbreaking, moving, incredible. Eliot uses language(s) like no other poet, living or dead. Take a few months to work your way through it -- buy a study guide if you have to. To understand this poem is to understand the human condition."
"I read this as part of a long list of material for an American Lit. exam, probably a similar introduction for most people who have read it. First, I listened to the poem. I didn't get it. Then I gave it another try. I stil didn't get it. I am determined to understand my American Lit. after all, so I read the poem myself and well, I can't describe it. I love this poem.
I read through Eliot's annotations, other peoples' interpretations, and I looked at the long list of works that Eliot steals from, err, I mean alludes to. What a well-read individual Eliot was! I have this picture of him now that's probably not too flattering. I mean who the hell writes a poem like this? It's confusing and full of I forget how many languages and references to works of great world literature that I will probably never read but I have certainly heard of. But the poem was magic and as I kept reading, I did not want it to end and now I must go buy a copy for myself so I can open it and read it whenever I want."
"One should not read this poem without prior study of Eliot's life, the lost generation, and the historical turmoil of the twenties. Unless you are well versed in Latin, Greek, French, and German, I suggest you listen to a recording of the poem. This masterpiece requires extreme attention and research. It is nearly impossible to interpret the poem correctly without understanding the allusions that plague every line. I had to read each part three times, research all of the allusions, and then piece everything together. It takes at least two weeks to a month to read, understand, and appreciate.
Although I would never classify this as pleasure reading, no one should leave this world without reading it."
"A great advocate of "sampling" (smirk), Eliot weaves his own tale while drawing on and drawing in tales from various regions and times making this work both vastly influenced and influential. The version showing all of the editing is beautiful and personal... He wasn't afraid to slash out huge portions and retain only the most tightly woven language."
