"This is a MUST HAVE book especially for people who can not afford to see a high priced specialist in diabetes and have to depend on Nurses who may not be all that well informed. It is informative for both those who know about the disease or have just been diagnosed and a good review for diabetes educators. Dr. Peters is the world's top expert on Diabetes and lives in Calfornia where she treats the famous and the not so famous in her Beverly Hills Clinic. She also runs a Free Clinic for the poor in East Los Angeles. Diabetes like HIV is an auto-immune disease in which the body fails to make enough insulin or use it efficiently. Today, Diabetes is a pandemic through most of the Western World. While Diabetes can not absolutely be avoided because it is often determined by genetics as well as external causes; the affects on those prone to have it and those who develope this insidious disease can be modified so that one can live to a ripe old age as if one never had the disease. This involves diet, medications and excercise. One of the chief causes of the appearance of diabetes is the lack of excercise and a bad diet of all those things we love but should not have on a regular basis. Dr. Peters goes into some detail about the care and treatment of diabetes and advises that all diabetes should be under the care of an endocrinologist specializing in Diabetes because other physicians are inadequately trained to deal with this very specialized field and that is one of the major flaws in the medical care of diabetes patients since any physician can treat the illness and typically these are general practitioners and internists. Diabetes is a very labor intensive illness to care far on the part of the physician and Nurse Educator and requires more time than these professionals usually have time to give. For this reason a patient should learn to take care of themselves and become an expert on their illness with a knowledge as comparable to that a specialist physician."
"This book is a "must read" for anyone with or or interested in preventing the diagnosis of diabetes. As a healthcare provider, I recommend it to my patients and their family members. Dr. Peters writes clearly in understandable terms, and is thorough in covering the important issues related to diet, lifestyle and treatment options. I especially appreciate how she empowers readers to approach their healthcare providers. There are national guidelines regarding diabetes care, and if you as a patient know what they are, then you'll know if you are receiving adequate treatment and monitoring. This book is well worth the money!"
