great history!

by justakid on Apr 12, 2007

An exhaustively researched work that looks at the formative pre-code years. doherty effectively intertwines the films within their historical context, and his analysis is both compelling and witty. The book is divided into topics that range from newsreel documentaries to the gangster genre, from the "auhtentic" to high fantasy and his appreciation for the medium comes through. A quick critqiue: Doherty notably leaves out cartoons, and one has to keep in mind that many of these films across the different genres were released simultaneously in order to fully appreciate the "forest" while reading about certain types of trees. Overall, a great book!
