About this title: Calculus teachers recognize Calculus as the leading resource among the "reform" projects that employ the rule of four and streamline the curriculum in order to deepen conceptual understanding. The fifth edition uses all strands of the "Rule of Four" - graphical, numeric, symbolic/algebraic, and verbal/applied presentations - to make concepts easier to understand. "I have no idea why this appears to be the required reference text for many colleges. It's a lousy book on calculus. It is filled with lousy explanations on key concepts, then you are presented with very simple examples, and then thrown at incredible confusing and difficult questions. A case of too many authors spoil the book I guess."
"Yipes! This book may be a great reference for people who know calculus but for me, just learning? It's a struggle and a challenge. It's sparse on the text -- example problems frequently skip steps or lack descriptions of what happened between step "n" and "n + 1". It suffers from a lack of illustrations and sometimes it's difficult to imagine the problem. And perhaps most frustrating of all to a beginner like me -- problems at the end of each chapter are randomly tricky! In other words, problem #3 can be harder than problem #28 -- it's hard to feel like I'm building on past understanding."
