"This was recommended to me by the 11 year old son of one of my best friends, so of course I had to read it! He's totally captivated by greek mythology, so I can see why he'd love this series so much.
The first book was a decent read, but truthfully, after reading Harry Potter, it's hard to work up much enthusiasm for another boy with special powers. Harry's hard to beat IMO.
That said, Riordan's done his homework, and has certainly made a good case for energizing greek mythology and injecting a modern twist to the old tales. I would imagine that young boys 9-13 would really like this series, and if it get's them to read, then I say bravo to Riordan."
"I read this book as I vent all the books my grand daughter reads. I think I should stop her from reading. I am waiting for the rest of the series to arrive as I found the content exciting, the history given in a new and exciting way.
She told me about a series she had just finished reading, when I heard what she was describing I stated "that is Mythology"!
I would recommend this book for any young reader."
"I want to beat myself up because I waited so long to start this series.
No wait...*pat on the back* I waited until all the books were out, so I should be glad!
Man oh man, this was a great read. It took me MAYBE 2-3 pages to get past the fact that these were written to entertain a pretty young audience. Who cares? A smart 8 year old can recognize a great story as well as a smart 80 year old. Besides, the more I read, the more sarcasm I picked up on. I like to think that Riordan thought to himself "here you go, smart adult person enjoying my book...I'll include some humor for you too" when he wrote in some of the stuff he did.
The book DID remind me a lot of Harry Potter. Here you have Percy Jackson, who is completely out of place in the human world. He finds out that he isn't (completely) human...and THEN later finds out he is even set apart in his new world. Then he gets to go on a quest and spank some evil. He plays his part well, he is every bit the lovable hero.
Alright, time to go get started on four more amazing books about Peter Johnson (oh wait...I mean Percy Jackson ;)."
"I LOVED Harry Potter. I really really really liked Fablehaven. Now that Harry Potter is over and I'm waiting for the next Fablehaven, I'm trying to find other books like those to read.
This book is nowhere near Harry Potter and not quite Fablehaven. I think it's written for a younger audience also. I liked the characters - they are relateable and sympathetic. The story is interesting but slightly predictable (and I do not try to figure out books before they unfold, so that's saying a lot).
I think one main thing that put me off was the Greek gods backdrop. The reifying of these myths is just not believable for me. Not that teen wizards or fairy sanctuaries are realistic, but Rowling and Mull do an excellent job of explaining how these things could exist without human knowledge. Riordan just has too hard a time explaining it all in a way that I can buy.
All that being said, I will read the rest of the series, because they are entertaining and the story moves quickly. And I will remain on the lookout for the next Harry Potter."
