"This book is absolutely adorable! It's about a little girl and her special memories visiting her grandparents. There is a window that holds meaning for her because she can look in from outside at her grandparents, look outside at the world, and many other things. "Description Norton Juster starts out this book wonderfully. He describes what a hello, goodbye window is and then begins to describe all the varied people in the little girl's life. It is a book about cross generations and mixed marriages. The book takes us through activities the little girl does at her grandparent's house. The story gives the reader examples of what this particular family listens to for music, eats for breakfast and enjoys as leisure time activities. The little girl is picked up by her parents later in the book. The book demonstrates many positive, smiling, and loving adult relationships and all the joy that comes from them.
Analysis The item I immediately noticed was that both the grandparents and the parents were a mixed marriage. In my generation that is a rare occurrence. My question would be to examine how children notice or not this situation? Is this something to directly point out? Or do we as teachers want to exemplify that this is nothing special and is perfectly normal? The book has its limitations in the subject matter. It is pretty fluffy and superficial. There is nothing deep a teacher can really dig into. The amount of text and number of pages suggests this is a book for older children, but the word choice and sentence length target a younger reader. This is were I see a conflict. I don't know if a second grader would find this book exciting. On the other hand I don't know if a early first grader has the attention to read the entire book.
Reflection I would use this book in my class as a read aloud to 1st graders. I would not specifically point out that the men are white and the women are black. Instead I would ask questions about their heritage and compare it to the heritage of the students in the classroom. Through discussions about the illustrations, I could demonstrate that people of many different ethnic backgrounds can be full of love and kindness towards each other."
