About this title: Has the true history of the founding of America been rendered safe, palatable, and sanitized by historians? The American Revolution was just that: a violent upheaval. And the rebels were just that: rebels. In this people's history of the American Revolution, Gary B. Nash presents an alternative to the Founding Fathers school of American history, ...

"Nash examines often-overlooked parts of the American Revolution to reconstruct a "democratic" history that avoids the grand narrative styles of other historians such as Gordon Wood, and presents an every man's story of the Revolution. The introduction, wherein Nash reacts to a number of historical myths that have cropped up over the roughly two centuries since the Revolution, presents a new and enlightening aspect of the Revolution that Nash feels gets lost under the gloss of the Founding Fathers. In the end, the Revolution itself was much less of an earth-shattering event for the majority of individuals who hoped to cash in on the promises of rights and happiness but found themselves excluded from participating in the new republic (notably the Native Americans in the Northwest hinterlands and enslaved Africans in the south). Nash's history is less the triumphant progress of the American nation, but the dark side of liberty."
"Incoherent and tiresome. The Unknown American Revolution is a jumble of vignettes designed to illustrate a paper-thin thesis that couples a cliché (most of the people caught up in the American Revolution were not elite white men) with an anachronism (these non-elite-white-men wanted radical democratic change). Nash culls stories of women, nonwhites, farmers, and workers from secondary sources -- a worthwhile endeavor, I suppose -- but simply piles them in narrative fragments instead of conducting a thorough examination of their ideas or their relationships to each other."
"This book highlights those groups who, though theoretically included in the high ideals espoused in the D of I, were disadvantaged, abused, or ignored by its writers: Native and African Americans, women, and the middle and lower classes.
It does a great job highlighting leaders/exceptional characters from these various groups, and of explaining the economic and/or philosophical reasons underlying the treatment these people received at the hands of our founding fathers.
Nash's writing suffers from overuse of certain favorite words: conservatives are limited to sputtering, while armies and other trekkers rarely get to walk or hike, as they only seem to have trudged from place to place. I hope not to read the word 'radical' again for quite some time.
Additionally, the organization and especially the chronology is a mess, which makes the various plots difficult to follow. This is perhaps due to the book being a synthesis of a lot of other books (the bibliography cites very few primary sources)."
"I read "The Unknown American Revolution" by Gary B. Nash. The book is given the wrong name. It should have been titled "Behind the Scenes of the American Revolution." Since Nash is a history priofessor at UCLA I have no doubt that he knows the subject, but it does not help the book.
The time period from 1763 to 1800 is a fascinating and complicated one, probably much more compicated than many others in the past. Most of what I've learned about the American Revolution was obtained from books, and to date (2009) I've read at least six with more to go.
I CANNOT RECOMMEND THE NASH BOOK AS THE FIRST ONE TO READ. Nash does not devote enough text to activities of important people (Washington, Adams, Franklin, Robert Morris, etc.), nor to important political events (writing of the Declaration of Independence, problems that the Continental Congress had, etc), or military problems (various battles, American and British strategies.) Nash writes about the problems that ordinary citizens had in gaining representation in Colonial legislatures, and problems that Blacks, Women and Indians had. Events in his book are not covered in detail in other books and that makes Nash's book useful. But it should be read AFTER other books. Nash also separates his various chapters by years, but he does not stick to the events that happend in those years and includes events of prior years in the chapters. He also jumps around within the chapters from locality to locality and from subject to subject. It makes for complications in reading.
The book by Middlekauf is a good beginning on the subject. Those by Fehrling and Ellis are excellent. Gordon Wood's books also provide good background. There qre also many other books to read.
The time period is fascinating, and can be enjoyed. There is much mythology about the founding of this country. Reading about the subject will provide the true facts."
