About this title: In 19th-century China, when wives and daughters live in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county develop their own secret code for communication. This work offers a brilliantly realistic journey back to an era of Chinese history that is as deeply moving as it is sorrowful.

"This story will not fade from your memory for a long time after you finish it. You will feel your loyalties twist and turn and be prompted to ask what would I do, if that were me. Ms. See has carefully crafted each character with great skill giving them depth and a realness that doesn't leave you when you turn the last page. I heartily recommend this for young adults and older adults. As your life perspective changes, so to will your take on the choices made in this story."
"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is an incredibly visual read. Set in China in the 19th century, Lisa See mastefully brings you close to the characters whose lives are bound by cultural roles and the difficult experiences of foot-binding and arranged marriages. This book was chosen by our book club and was very well received. A book well worth reading, the characters and their experiences will stay with you for a long time after."
"The greatest accomplishment I think See obtained in writing this book, was putting all the actions in such a historical context, that they seem normal. The actions of foot-binding and being betrothed at age six are put into historical/cultural context enough that they aren't made a spectacle that interferes with the story, but are an integral part of it.
I thought the book moved very quickly and read it in one day. Every chance I got I was sitting down to follow the story of Snow Flower and Lily. The characters are far from perfect, and make many mistakes in their lives, which makes the story all the more believable.
A great companion book to this is Aching for Beauty, a book, it seems that Lee actually wrote a review for. It is clear that Lee got a lot of her research on foot binding either from this book, or from similar sources."
