"I really enjoy this series. It's light, quick & easy to read & is a good break from more intense writings. I like the characters & the sense of family & community that the author has built. As a knitter I appreciate that aspect of the books. There was a knit shop my mother & I went to when I was a young girl & it was set up similarly with a big table for people to sit & knit & visit, so these books are a bit nostalgic for me. I also like the knit patterns & recipes that are included with each book."
"Kelly Flynn has just returned to Colorado, where she spent her summers as a child. Unfortunately, this time it is not for pleasure - her Aunt Helen(who has been like a mother to her) has been murdered. Once Kelly arrives, she finds an instant support group in the ladies who frequent the knit shop across the road from her aunt's cottage. They all knew and loved her aunt, and warm to Kelly immediately. When Kelly realizes that things aren't adding up, she starts to do her own investigating. The main question is: why would her aunt take out a new mortgage to get a $20,000 check in the days before she died?
Kelly also learns the joy being in a knit shop (all that lovely yarn!) and how to knit. She and her friends often "knit on it" when they have problems or are trying to solve the mysteries surronding Helen's death. I can certainly relate to that - I love escaping in some nice knitting!
The only thing that got on my nerves is that everything that someone says that Kelly agrees with is described as "the idea resonated within Kelly". I was over the "resonating" by about 20 pages in. But it wasn't enough to detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.
A good read for knitting enthusiasts and mystery readers alike."
"This was a good firt novel in the cozy mystery group. It is about a CPA that has to go to Colorado to tie up her Aunt's estate. At that time she discovers that her Aunt was actually murdered. At the same time she gets pulled into the yarn shop next door and discovers that she has "Fiber fever." It is a uncontrollable urge to touch the yarns in all their glorious colors and textures. There she meets her Aun't friends and becomes part of the group. Of course, she solves the mystery in the end!"
"I would never have bought this book for myself, and it's good to see my instincts proved right. I don't know what I'll say to my step-mother, though, when she asks how it was. I had a headache last night, and wanted something I wouldn't have to give much mental energy to, but after three pages, I think this book actually made my headache worse. The writing is appalling. I could barely find the stilted dialogue underneath all the unnecessary adverbs, and based on everything that was described as "next to" the protagonist's childhood home, the book is apparently set in twelve-dimensional space. I know Nancy Pearl says you should read to page (100-your age) before giving up on a book, but I couldn't do it; on page four, I abandoned it for a crossword puzzle.
