"The main character in this book is really the town of Haines, Alaska, and it's very fully-realized. You get a good sense for the particular spirit of the town and its residents. Unfortunately, there's not much here in the way of substance. The different chapters don't much connect, and a lot of them fall flat anyway. If you want to gawk at small town quirkiness, I'd recommend you just rent a Coen brothers movie instead."
"A very quaint portrait of life in a small, remote Alaskan town. Too quaint for me--the author sidesteps some important issues arising in her city for the sake of maintaining harmony, something I couldn't abide. But as I was headed to a similarly small, remote town in Alaska (my first visit to the state), it painted an interesting portrait of life there."
"I guess I was just expecting a little more from this book. I live in small town Maine and thought I'd have lots in common with the stories in this book and in some way, I do. However, it's a little dry. It does portray life in small town which is interesting especially to those that have never experienced it, but there was nothing there that kept me wanting to read more."
"I love the real-time feeling the stories in this book leave you with as well as the reminder that with all things in life there is balance. Her reminders come from living in rural Alaska where great beauty comes with great danger and living in a small community brings large scale intimacy. It's a great read - oh, and the last story made me cry and cry and cry - it was wonderful."
