He also finds romance--in fact, he's soon torn between two gorgeous women: Gally Deveraux, who is married, and Susanna Benteen, who's considered a witch by the ignorant local rubes. These same townsfolk, who care more about economics than about nature, have been hoodwinked by developers into believing that building a highway through their sorry ...

"The writing was very nice but a little flowery for my taste. I did not ever read the Bridges of Madison County but assume from the reviews that it was very similar. There seemed to be a lot going on though which I didn't enjoy very much. Quite a few characters with quite a few stories. There was clearly one main character but quite a few that came in a close second. While I don't necessarily have anything bad to say about this book, it definitely was not my cup of tea."
"I like the main character; that's the only reason I kept reading. The book went in too many directions at once, telling the history of the region, the politics of the area, the engineering of road building, and the character development. It was too preachy regarding environmentalism, etc. I did like that the battle against the bull dozer was not entirely a success and how the main character built a good life for himself and others in the end."
