"This book is really good. Its about the slavory time period back in american history. Its told in many perspectives, which i personaly think is really good because it helps me understand what everyones thinking. They tell it from the slaves point, from the mothers piont the owners point, basically almost everyone. What intrests me the most is the different conflicts in the book told mostly with emotion rather than details like most historical fiction would do. So it doesnt sound like a textbook, it sounds like some one in grave danger.
There were conflicts like love amongst slaves but not being able to married, affair with a white wife and african slave, being sold away from family, the roads to freedom and the different atmostpheres in the north and south of america.
I highly recommend this book becasue its mad good. Even though it seems all historical your literally gonna cry when you read what they went through by their perpectives."
"Simple and short, an easy read for nearly all of my students, this is written in dialogue form. The topic is the largest slave auction in American history and it is told through the perspective of all characters involved. It is based on a true story. I'm working on a way to incorporate it into my class."
"Called a "novel in dialogue," I liked the style of writing chosen to tell this story. It's about the largest slave auction ever held, which is a pretty heavy topic. But Lester told the story from many points of view, and told not just about that day but also shared what happened to those characters as a result of the auction. He did a great job of showing the many different perspectives that existed. A very easy, approachable book that will bring this topic to a wider audience of my students."
"Written from the perspectives of slaves and their owners in the United States this novel twists history and fiction together. Based on the largest slave auction event in Georgia in 1859, the reader is brought back to inequality, humans treated like animals, and families broken apart. Emma, the main voice in the novel shares her experiences as a slave and escapee. I would have liked this book more if the characters were able to develop in a deeper sense. I felt that Julius Lester only allowed the readers to scratch the surface of each character because their were so many voices to be heard. Yes this book was a novel with dialogue, but I felt disconnect from the characters."
