About this title: Laurie Notaro, author of AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A FAT BRIDE and THE IDIOT GIRLS' ACTION-ADVENTURE CLUB, is now a thirtysomething wife and writer. But she's still finding humor in her misadventures and imperfections. (Things that embarrass most of us just provide more opportunities for Notaro's wit.) In essays that range from coping with pornographic spam to trying to hail a cab on a busy New York City street corner to enduring the trials and humiliations of a book tour, Notaro sails through it all with her aplomb, her sharp eye, and her sense of humor very much intact.

"I sooo relate to Laurie Notaro. Oh my goodness, what a great read! It was awesome! I laughed so hard that my ribs hurt. And I cried when she talked about when her Nana moving out of her house, I knew how she felt... I felt the same way when my Grandfather sold his house. Anyway, I loved the book! It was awesome!"
"This book was a bit of a disappointment after reading The Idiot Girls' Action Adventure Club. That book was so hilarious that I had high hopes that all of Notaro's books would be side-splitters. Well, maybe the success of Idiot Girls' gave her a feeling that she had to top it or something, because We Thought You Would Be Prettier seems forced. I can see her sitting for days at the computer trying to insert even more witty, sarcastic and snarky comments into her short stories. The effect is that it is just too much. As another reviewer said, I Thought This Would Be Funnier.
P.S. Because of how much I enjoyed Idiot Girls, I do plan on reading more of Laurie Notaro's writing. There is definitely a comic talent there...she just needs to relax and not try so hard."
"Liked it and didn't like it. Some parts were quite funny and I found myself laughing at loud quite a few times near the beginning of the book. But then that ended and it lost something. The numerous pop culture references were amusing, but would have been much funnier if I had read them closer to the publication date. Which means the more time that goes by, the more the book loses a big part of it. There were definitely parts that I, or any woman, could relate to; but there's nothing really memorable about this book. I'd give it two-and-a-half stars, rounded up to three because it made me laugh in the beginning."
"I'm not generally a reader of the "modern sassy-girl telling various stories in an episodic format" genre. I bought this book about 4 years ago, and then lost it to the black hole that is my parents' storage when they moved while I was away at college.
I just found it and decided to restart it.
First of all, it seems a main problem with this genre seems to be how quickly the references and jokes become dated. That certainly is true with this book. There are several times where the jokes or references can instantly peg this book as having been written in 2003-2005, and no longer really are that funny.
Second of all, though there were many genuinely funny parts, there were several times when it really felt like she was trying way way too hard to be funny, and those times it fell flat.
This is not a genre I'll be seeking out at my local book store."
