The Pageturner

Poetically Captures Shortened Life of Martyr

"I MEMEORIZED AND CAN RECITE YOUR BOOK!" was the first sentence of the second email I sent to author Marilyn Nelson. "Genius" is an understatement for this inspiring work elegantly jam packed with stunning figurative language. Nelson uses pieces of history, other writings, plants, and various other things and intricately entwines them into an honorable wreath for Emmett Till. But what makes this book even more astounding is the fact that the author used a heroic crown of Petrarchan sonnets in iambic pentameter to pull the reader into a realm of horror, sorrow, and new beginnings. The illustrator Philippe Lary also did a magnificent job using sybolism to perfectly match Nelson's words. I honestly wish that this book gets the respect that it deserves and should be a part of every school's literature.
