"Good story and good storytelling, especially considering it's a first book.
Crippled hero, stalwart heroine and conflicted villain came together (often in conflict) to keep readers engaged. Appreciated that Sanderman took the time to share both the motivation and means by which Sarene rose above the women's roles of her culture. Too many more hints about Hrathen might have spilled the beans (and, because I don't want to even risk it, I'll mark this as containing spoilers, even though it's only oblique.) Raoden begged for more depth. Despite his pain and outer struggles, his path to the light almost seemed too easy. Nice supporting cast.
Sanderson's style is a good match for Robert Jordan, and--because he at least knows how to finish a story--I have high hopes for him to bring something out of the swamp where Jordan left the Wheel of Time series.
Liked the cover art.
Seemed a set up for more Elantris stories, but considering how this ended it'd take some effort to create a new conflict as dramatic."
"Jason read this book a few weeks ago and thought it was one I would enjoy. He knows there are some sci-fi/fantasy books that I like, but many have plot elements I don't care for. This book had all of the best elements of a good fantasy book, with none of the parts I dislike.
It's difficult to say which parts of this book I liked the most because I really enjoyed pretty much the entire book.
I'll start with what's important to me: This book was well-written. The start of the book is mysterious and I found myself immediately intrigued. Throughout the book, I thought Sanderson's writing was thorough without being heavy-handed. In fact, there were plot points that he didn't explicitly spell out that were interesting for their omission. Part of being a good writer is knowing what not to say and I liked that Sanderson clearly gets this.
Three dimensional characters are always a big plus in a novel for me. The characters were very well developed in Elantris and even after I felt I knew a character, they still evolved and surprised me.
In fact, this book surprised me throughout. That's not always easy to do with someone who reads as much as I do, but this book really contained twists and turns that I never saw coming - not just once, but several times. I loved that!
Finally, I liked that Sanderson didn't take our world and loosely re-create it. The cultures and religions in Elantris don't mirror any in this world. I liked that I wasn't constantly saying to myself, "Oh, that country represents England and that one represents Japan." It was much more satisfying to see a completely new world that contains elements of our current world, but doesn't read like a veiled political commentary.
If you aren't a fan of sci-fi/fantasy, I'd encourage you to still give this book a try. If you enjoy books that contain court politics, religious overtones, a hint of romance, faithful friendships, quick moving plots or characters who move you, give this book a try - it has all that and more."
"Elantris is the first book written by the author who is taking over the Wheel of Time series after Robert Jordan's death. I've heard good things about his warbreaker series, but as Elantris is a standalone book, I figured it'd be a good indication of who was taking over one of my favorite fantasy series.
The plot is thus: Ten years ago, the city of Elantris was the City of the Gods. Almost every citizen wielded power unthought of amongst the population of the rest of the world. Randomly, a person would find themselve one morning with the power of an Elantrian, and just move to the city. Then, something happened, and Elantris literally fell apart. The god-like citizens started rotting in a semblance of un-death, the city started to fall into ruin, the very stones themselves almost rotting, and the "new" citizens just woke up afflicted with the same rotting that afflicted the old citizens. People who woke up this way were banished into the city itself, and considered dead, and this has been going on with no explanation for ten years.
This is where we come in. Our main character is Raoden, and we follow his adventures from waking up, having gone to bed a prince of his realm, afflicted with "The Shaod", as they've come to call it, and his quest to figure out what happened and try to reverse it.
This is clearly Sanderson's first book, but it's honestly one of the better first books I've read. He has an imaginative magic system, plenty of intrigue and plot twists, some you see coming and some you don't. The ending comes on a little rushed, and it definitely feels left open for maybe another book, but everything I've found about it refers to it as a single novel, which is too bad, as I'd have read a second one, should it come out. But the characters are well fleshed out for the most part, and the world feels real. I was left thinking that, if this is the author's first book, and he's getting rave reviews about his other series', then I think the Wheel of Time series is going to be just fine."
"Elantris is a pretty decent first novel, but it has its flaws. It is split into three storylines that take place at the same time and is more a political thriller than a classic fantasy novel.
The Problem for me was that I had problems with different aspects of all three character storys. I loved Raoden's story in Elantris, but his chracter was just a bit too perfect for my taste. With Hrathen it was exactly the opposite: He is one of the most interesting book characters I know, but his story was a bit flat. And at first I didn't like Sarene and her political intrigue plot at all.
The novel gets pretty interesting in the middle, when the three plots start to overlap more. But sadly that is also the point where the story rushes on. I had no problems with the ending itself, but it all happened a bit too quick for my taste."
