"I read this, and A Million Little Pieces, before word came out that James Frey had fabricated just about everything in his books. Both books were amazing. Frey writes in a sort of free flow style, with random punctuation and run-on sentences, but it works with this subject matter, because it makes you feel like you are in his mind as he battles his monster addiction. Although it was disappointing to find out that he lied and these are not his memoirs at all, but rather just fiction novels, I would still recommend them."
"I love Leonard's character in this book. when I ws introduced to him in A Million Little Pieces, I had a strong notion as to who he was and what he was all about. Man, was I wrong. In this book, we see how putting labels on people can really affect how we see them without ever taking the time to get to know the real person. Leonard and James' relationship is one that I found so lovely and strange at the same time. I felt sorry for Leonard when in the first book, I didn't like him that much at all. Not as good as the first book but definitely worth the read."
"I'm sure everyone knows the scandal behind A Million Little Pieces. I still think the book was great even though some of it was made up and embellished. I'm sure the story of My Friend Leonard is no different. Even though the stories may be embellished, they still have instances that can be learned from.
My Friend Leonard was an easy read. It picks up right where A Million Little Pieces left off. It tells the story of Frey making it after rehab and a stint in jail. He makes this journey and is supported by his friend Leonard. Only in this story Leonard isn't always the one helping James. The book taught me that even when someone is helping you, you could be helping them - it's not always a weakness to ask for assistance, some times by reaching out you're showing someone else how strong you truly are. Anyway, the story was wonderful and full of surprises and humor. I enjoyed it."
"I read this a year after I finished A Million Little Pieces so I knew all about the controversy and Frey's writing style...but I was still disappointed. I guess I liked a Million Little Pieces because of Frey's use of the Tao, I thought he was getting somewhere with that. I thought I could see some kind of redemption perhaps. The Tao was curiously absent from My Friend Leonard, perhaps it helped him kick the addiction but he didn't seem to apply it to the greater whole of his life. Once the stint in rehab was over his self interest seemed to grow instead of diminish. All I could hear whilst reading this book was me, me,me,me - the level of his self-absorption was too high for me to feel any kind of connection with him. He was truly fortunate to have a friend like Leonard but it seemed that the more he got the less he gave."
