"First off, this book is massive 1300+ pages. Reading it is like holding two bricks taped together. That, plus the fact that it is a "graphic novel" might scare some readers off. Too bad for them though, because the story telling here is so good. It starts off cute and funny (like Pogo + Dungeons and Dragons) but moves quickly into the deeper meanings of friendships & loyalty. It gets bogged down a little in the mythology of the genesis of Bone's world, but that's a minor quibble.
I look forward to letting my kids read this book (in a few years)."
"Most of the time, when someone drops a brick of a book in your lap, you know right away that you are not going to read it because let's face it, it's too big! But every once in a while comes that brick of a book that's gripping and still awesome, regardless of its size. I have encountered that once in a blue moon treat in the graphic novel Bone, by Jeff Smith. While it may seem intimidating and boring because of its size, I'd advise you to follow that old cliché of "you can't judge a book by its cover" because that is precisely the case with bone. Bone is the story of three bone cousins, Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone who are run out of their industrialized town of Boneville and land in a middle age like valley. The book details their adventures through the valley and their encounters with many wonderful characters, such as quiche eating rat creatures and an Ox of a grandmother, Rose. Throughout the book, the characters are trying to get back to their home, but end up landing in what will be known in later times as a historical event for the valley. The characters are all very wonderful and have their own very unique personalities which you grow to love throughout the 1300+ page epic. Along with wonderful characters, the novel boasts wonderful art and scenery through the Bone creatures' adventures in the valley. I would recommend this book to anyone who is just looking for a good book to read on the train. You barely notice the stops pass you by as you're traveling because it's so easy to get sucked into this grand adventure. I would also recommend this to anyone who liked the Lord of the Rings and novels/graphic novels such as that."
"Although the graphics were in black & white (versus color of the smaller editions), it was still visually appealing. The contrast between the comic-style Bone characters and realistic scenery and supporting characters made it engaging; I also liked the floppy-eared dragon who appeared every once in a while. I enjoyed the simple storyline and themes, especially compared to many violent comics I've been reading lately. There was a good balance between comedy, action, and story. I would recommend this for older children (who can handle cigar smoking and beer drinking in a comic), young adults (who don't need violence for entertainment), and adults looking for something light to read."
"I started reading Bone knowing absolutely nothing about it. I didn't know Jeff Smith, I knew only that Bone was a giant black and white graphic novel and that a friend of mine loves it. The story starts with three odd characters that through a series of events and coincidences get involved in an epic war (which does remind me of Lord of the Rings). You know nothing about any of them, there is no introduction telling you who the characters are and it becomes very nice to get to know them and understand them with the parts of each one's past that you find out in small conversations now and then. As the story goes and you get past half of the pages you have to force yourself to close the book and sleep to be able to work the next day. Both the illustrations and the dialogues are great, it made me wish I could get a story going like Jeff Smith did with Bone. This novel has it all, fun, storyline, it's own mythology, more fun, cool characters going through life changing situations and corny love poems. I still can't decide if I should give it 4 or 5 stars. I only didn't feel the blast of emotions that my 5 stars books usually give me near the end, or after it. But there is nothing for me to point out as negative in this book. If you like comics and you like fantasy, be sure not to miss Bone."
