About this title: Alison Hart is a psychic who is tormented by her spirit guide, a nasty, clownish little creature named Morris who is visible only to Alison. Her life is enlivened, however, by her assistant, Colette, a divorcée who's been through the mill and who now manages the money Al earns from her career as a successful but mostly bogus psychic. Together, the women buy a brand-new house and, when they move in, Morris disappears. But Al's troubles are far from over: her horrific childhood as the daughter of a prostitute comes to haunt her, first on tape and then in person, and it begins to seem that her ...

"This was my first go at Mantel, on Grace's recommendation, and I think she is a great writer. I found myself admiring more than enjoying though - the book itself is for the most part cruel, nasty, unrelenting and depressing. The ending reinforces the idea that there is a system of justice at work (bad things happen to bad people, and good things happen to good people) which is reassuring and welcome, but I felt that I was kept distant from the characters throughout.
Some highlights include a tense negotiation for a new home; a trip to a garden centre to buy a shed; and a dog nearly eating a young child's head. So if you like homes or sheds or dogs, this one's for you."
"One of my all-time favorite books. I love Hilary Mantel's plain-spoken but off-kilter, original style, and the plot is simultaneously sinister and comforting. I re-read it a couple of times a year."
"I found this a superb quirky novel though it is not going to appeal to everyone. I've read a number of books recently with a spiritualist theme that mainly were a slight disappointment as they focused on the fraudulent practices over the 'real thing'.
This however was a black comedy which was about the lday-to-day ife of a jobbing medium, one doing the circuit of small venues and dealing with the recently and long dead. Think 'Ghost Whisperer' without the great wardrobe. It has great characters and quite a sting in the tale!
I had originally started to listen to this on cassette from the library but found it so good that got hold of a print copy to supplement my listening and re-check plot points."
"I got ~65% of the way through this book before giving up. It moves so slowly that I just couldn't take it any longer. It is funny and clever but the plot development is terrible. Based on other reviews and the book summary, I gather that something does happen later on in the book, but I don't think it's worth the struggle to get there..."
