"I have read the first three volumes of Shanower's magnificent saga and cannot wait for the next. Perhaps the most historically accurate and well-researched graphic novel I've ever read, this (projected) seven volume series will trace the history of the Trojan War. Shanower demythologizes the story: the Gods are there, but much of the supernatural mumbo-jumbo is grounded in reality. Vast and cinematic, with painstaking detail in the art, this is a masterpiece. PS. I read 600 pages and the war hasn't started yet. My new Facebook pal Shanower told me to read Homer and Racine if I want to know what happens next."
"Any graphic presentation of historical or pseudo-historical events has to live with comparison of Larry Gonick's amazing "History of the Universe" books, which are a brutal act to follow. Even cutting "A Thousand Ships" some slack on this account, though, it's a bit of a disappointment. The strengths of the graphic format aren't brought to bear, as characters aren't drawn with enough individuality to be able to tell them apart easily. Transitions are often unmarked, making it possible to read through several panels before realizing that there has been an important shift in time and place.
Shanower has chosen to depict the people of the epic as ordinary people, which is a reasonable decision. For my taste, though, it waters down the mythology, stripping it of a lot of its grandeur and humor, and making it just a little bit dull."
"Eric Shanower is retelling the Iliad in a series of graphic novels that translate the Greek poetry into contemporary prose, with highly detailed black and white illustrations."
"I like it when people tells history through comic! Trojan war is widely recognised through "The Illiad" written by Homer. Eric Shanower didn't satisfied with just one reference, he did crosschecked to history textbook, even he did some research about it. He tells this story with a more personal point of view, with it we can dive deeper in the story. The Trojan War is caused (ashamely) by the kidnapping of Helen of Sparta. Helen fell for Paris, a Trojan prince and left her husband and daughter for lust. Helen's husband was deeply dissapointed that he begged his brother, king Agamemnon to unify all of Achaean kings to fight for Trojan's grief. The war took 9 years, concluded by the great fire on the Trojan city."
