"The Diggingest dog is a book I remember vividly from childhood. it's one of those books that your parents read over and over again, that seeps into your conscience until you know it from memory. It was with great delight that I found a copy on Alibris and am now able to read it to my own little girl. It's written in that rhyming couplet style that kids love to listen to and is nicely illustrated, with not too many words per page. In short an excellent early reader. It's a story about Duke, a dog in a pet store who is bought by Sammy Brown and taken back to the Brown farm. At first Duke can't dig, having been born and raised in a pet store, but with a little help from Sammy he's soon digging with gusto. Too much in fact. he goes on to dig up the whole town until confronted by Sammy and the other dogs of the town in a dramatic climax. Is it a book about talent rising above the circumstances of birth, the responsibility of being gifted or the acceptance of responsibility for ones actions and ultimately forgivness? Maybe it is. More importantly its just a good read with the kids."
