"I read this book because the baby whisperer was recommended by a friend. I wanted to help my son take longer naps and try to end habitual night wakings. So I mostly focused on her sections regarding sleep. Generally speaking I'm not a fan. I like that she suggests a basic routine, as do most child experts. If you were just skimming the book you would assume that she advocates very strict scheduling because she puts down specific time slots, but if you actually read it she tells you to watch your baby's cues. I found her wake-to-sleep method to get habitual waking intriguing; basically if you baby is waking at the same time every day you go in before he normally wakes and rouse him a bit and then let him go back to sleep. I haven't tried it yet but I may. As for her main sleep training tool for babies over 4 months of age the P.U./P.D. (pick up put down) I do not suggest this at all. I don't believe in allowing (or should I say causing) a child to cry for an extended period of time, even if you're standing next to them and picking them up occasionally for a minute or two, in the name of more independent sleep. So read it if you choose but do so with a grain of salt. You can wade through the bad to get a few basic nuggets, however these nuggets can be could elsewhere."
"Tracy Hogg has wonderful, practical advice for the basics of baby care. She can be a bit blunt and some are put off by such statements as "look to yourself" when your child is having a sleep/eating/behavior problem. But if you can avoid taking it as a personal criticism you will see the wisdom of the advice and it has helped me to problem-solve in day-to-day parenting issues that arise with my son. Her methods are sensitive and nurturing while still providing lots of structure and consistency.
This is definitely a parent-led approach but her ideology is also based around being tuned into your baby. This is a great resource for "how" to accomplish things, but her reasonings for "why" can be a bit vague and even contradicts herself from one chapter to the next. All-in-all, a great place to look for practical solutions, but not an overall parenting philosophy, just good, tried and true tips from someone with lots of experience with babies and toddlers."
