About this title: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is Dee Brown's eloquent, fully documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century. When it was first published in 1971, both reviewers and the reading public responded first with shock, then a deep sense of shame, calling it "shattering" (Washington Post), and "heartbreaking" (The New York Times). It went on to sell over a million copies in hardcover and four million copies in paperback, and was translated into 15 languages around the world.

"Anyone interested in "American" history might do well to start at the real beginning with the First People. I find reading this book both painful and essential, a sort of the coming-of-age ritual I never received in my own culture. We are given a context for a history that has been glorified as much of US "foreign" affairs has been and is reported to the citizenry in an effort to direct one's thinking and feeling. This is an exquisite opportunity to gain insight into other ways of seeing and acting as human beings."
"Apparantly "all men are created equal" left out the bit in brackets that said (unless you are a member of an Indian tribe). A detailed ride across the West using archive material that tells a very different story of how the West was won than any cowboy film does. The rapid spread west of an ever increasing white population hungry for land to build a home, allied to a sense that Indian tribes were inferior and savage, saw the erosion of hunting lands and the desecration of the great buffalo herds, and the seizure of vast tracts of Indian land, often as the result of treachery or force. Many infamous chiefs such as Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Red Cloud, Sitting Bull and others often desperately tried to secure a homeland through negotiation with the government before ultimately being forced to take up arms to defend their home and their way of life. There are several Hollywood movies buried in this book and it would be great to see someone have the courage to film one, if only so modern America is forced to look in the mirror at the appalling behaviour of its ancestors."
"I grew up with a fascination with native American history. In grade school I wished I could be part "Indian", but settled for being able to name many of the tribes that once roamed freely across the US. (I can't do that anymore.) My father passed on to me the Louis L'Amour western books he read (of which the Sackett series is a great read), fueling my interest. Rarely do I encounter non-mythological stories about these diverse cultures. This book is the BEST historical reference told in a storyline that I have EVER read. It saddens my soul to learn so much about the demise of these peoples at the hands of those who called themselves Americans. At the same time I have re-learned the values of heritage, of hope, and in living and dying with courage and conviction. This is a factual narrative fully collaborated with references, and should be a must read for every student, for everyone. The movie doesn't come close to touching the power of the lives displayed in these pages. I couldn't put it down, and I'll never be same person. Turns out that I got that childhood wish...About 5 years ago I learned that my great-great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee. Now I have a small sense of the pride and tragedies that she lived with, of which I would not have known if not for this book."
"A terrific but heart-breaking book. It tells the buried story of the genocide of the Native Americans and shows how its always the victors who write history. It also becomes apparent that history repeats itself and that the american administration is still making the same mistakes now as it was then....."
