"This was a fantastic take on life in the suburbs between two unlikely men who Mr. Hammer & Mr. Nailles, who become intertwined when one decides the answer is his problems is the other. Really, the exciting and stimulating parts of this book, and most of Cheever's writing/storytelling has to do with passing details about sub-characters."
"I've never read Cheever before. Very impressive. A style that veers from close to mundane to close to stream of consciousness in the space of a few sentences. I found that book absorbing and was awed by the writing."
"A clever and funny picture of the early assault on mid-century American suburbia by the cultural freight train of the 1960s. Memorable characters and some great vignettes, but plot was a little thin."
"A dystopian view of what many Americans strived for in the 60's: a superficially happy and calm life in the suburbs. This book (the first of Cheever's that I have read) reminds me strongly of Updike's Rabbit series."
