"A beautiful description of the life of the great man, the book shows Martin as a child, first encountering the insanity of segregation. We see him grow up and preach a gospel of love and acceptance. Following this are small looks at the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, civil rights marches, and his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Finally, while marching with striking garbage collectors (a fact not often mentioned in children's biographies of King), he was shot and killed. Says the book at the end, "His big words are alive for us today"."
"1st - 5th Grade (Read Aloud/Biography Study/Independent Reading) Collier uses his signature art style, a wonderful blend of paintings and collage, to illustrate this story. His individualistic blend of photos, fabrics, and painting brings a strong sense of symbolism to this book. Rappaport put a extraordinary twist to the story of Martin Luther King Jr., she used her own words in combination with King's quotes to portray the profound message of his life. Martin Luther King Jr. is a name many school age kids have heard repetitively and understand his influence on us today, but rarely does his story start with him as a child, children will be able to relate to him and his childhood dreams. This book is a timeless book, which can be used in a classroom for many years to come. History/Language Arts
Lesson Plan Idea: Have children write short biographies on a selected historical figure, using direct quotes from their chosen person. Use this book as an example when introducing the Lesson."
"Martin's Big Words is a great book for young children to begin learning about the life and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rappaport uses beautiful language and vocabulary to help children understand Martin's values and dreams and historical events of the time. Collier uses watercolor and cut paper collage to add to the uniqueness of the book. I enjoyed Collier's ability to create suspense through page turns with the bus Rosa Parks made famous and the American flag extending across the pages. This story would be a great read-aloud for both primary and intermediate grades to discuss the vocabulary and Civil Rights Movement surrounding Dr. King Jr.'s life."
"The words and illustrations reflected the title of the story, Martin's Big Words, in the sense that they were very large in size and clear to read and see. From the cover to the end of the book there is no negative space. The illustrations were outstanding. They were full of life and their details were immaculate! I think that this is a great interpretation of Martin Luther King JR's life and it is very appropriate for elementary aged students. This is a story that children can really appreciate, understand, and get into. It would be a perfect book to use in the classroom."
