"This is a book of short stories by Wm Faulkner. I read only The Bear- about a boy who gets his first gun, and hunting trip at age 10, and becomes a skilled woodsman and hunter in the Mississippi forests. I found it very confusing and incomprehensible in parts! Set in rural Mississippi in the mid 1800s to the mid 20th c, it reveals a pristine forest being destroyed by encroaching civilization. And like wily old bear Ben, it will eventually be gone, killed by stronger forces than it is. Indians, blacks, whites, and a mix of all 3 inhabit the area and the story. Ike tells the story back and forth from the period in his life when he begins to hunt down Ben."
"my love for william faulkner is confirmed. :) i loved these short stories because they all offered a different way to experience faulkner. spotted horses was by far the most entertaining and simple read from faulkner i've experienced. old man was interesting, understanding how much the prisoner desired to return to the safety of the prison yard was fascinating. my favor is reserved for the bear. this story felt like the faulkner i knew and loved. steam of consciousness, environmentalism, analyzing the view of 'ownership' of land - the ensuring 'curse' of the South i.e. slavery ... the characters. ah, my heart lies in this story. it makes me want to read Go Down Moses..."
"The Bear -- William Faulkner (+) Faulkner's prose is unbelievable. If some of the BIG novels have been daunting, try these shorter works (and the short stories which I will be dipping into further).
Old Man -- William Faulkner (+) They made a Hallmark Hall of Fame out of this short novel a couple of years ago and I looked for it on my shelves at that time with no success. Good story, fantastic prose. Give me more!
Spotted Horses -- William Faulkner (~) A short entertainment that puts Snopses and wild Texas horses together with disastrous and very funny results."
