About this title: The first book from the lucrative "Star Wars" product machine, this novel was written before "The Empire Strikes Back" was released and, as such, does contain some inaccuracies as far as the "Star Wars" sequence of events goes. In this installment, Luke follows Leia as she searches a remote planet for a crystal that will give the holder power over the Force.

"I read this when it came out. it was riding the "wave" of the early Star wars mania. I remember it being a mildly interesting science fantasy read. the funn y part is that for me the memory that stands out is a scene in the book where Luke is fighting and throwing things around with the force...which it was established ater would put him in the dark side colum. Got to be careful when you write those early novels. it was like a James Blish Star trek novel written back in the early days where he had the Enterprise traveling at "near light speed" instead of using the "warp" idea and the crew was dealing with time distortion and taking years to travel....oops."
"The full title for this book is "Splinter of the Mind's Eye: From the Further Adventures of Luke Skywalker." Sadly, this would be the last book that would carry that interesting 'adventures of Luke Skywalker' moniker. It would be scrubbed from Star Wars when that story was later rebranded as 'A New Hope.' This story was written by ADF for a specific reason. Lucas had no assurance that Star Wars would be a hit, and this is the story that would have followed up Star Wars if it went the way of, say, Serenity, a hit with the fans, but not widely well received. "The principal characters are Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader. The book was originally written to be filmed as a low-budget sequel to Star Wars if the original film was not a success." When Star Wars blew up into a global smash, this story fell by the wayside.
I read this before Empire had been filmed. This is now a non-canon spin-off, a nice little look into what-could-have-been, when Leia and Luke still had some of those romantic sparks between them before it was revealed they were brother and sister (a proof that reinforces what I've said for some time, that Lucas didn't /initially/ have the whole three trilogy outline set in his head, or he wouldn't have signed off on this). fwiw, remember that the first version of the Star Wars book was titled, "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker."
This was a delightful story that brought a real sci-fi sensibility to what we know recognize more as space fantasy."
"This is interesting to read just to see what the Star Wars universe looked like before The Empire Strikes Back was released. I don't think the author knew that Luke and Leia were brother and sister. The writing's not great and I don't think I made it all the way through."
"Yeah, not much to like about this book. It was done in 1978 and it seemed to be right after the The New Hope movie. He did not get the characters right at all. The adventure had Luke, Leia and Vader. The book made Luke knowing a different languages, Leia being a whinning brat, who was really annoying (I wished she died in it) and had Vader being someone that was really not that powerful at all and him not knowing the Force that well. It was a nice attempt, but he really didn't get the characters correct from even the first movie.
The book had a a couple pages from George Lucas saying after he made the movie this book came out and he knew the characters had a lot of stories that could be done in all directions, etc. I really think it was a polite way of saying after reading this book and maybe thinking about it that he hated the book and that is why he decided to not allow anyone to write books about the characters until the late 90's. And that I am thankful for.
