"The Language of Genes by Dr. Steve Jones is not a textbook in genetics, but rather an expose on how the the study of genetics began and why (to prove bloodlines in royalty). He is thorough in covering the field of genetics, beginning his tour with Mendel's peas and taking us to the Human Genome Project (which was only in the inital stages at the writing of this book). Dr. Jones is a professor of genetics at University College in London and the editor of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution. Most of his scientifc career has been the study of snails. He refers to Darwinian theory throughout the book, but admits that in "The Origin of the Species", Darwin had "an enormous gap in his evidence". Putting those difficult questions behind, Jones provides vast information in the genetics of human beings and heredity, the most fascinating for me being the difference between the female (XX) and male (XY), and why females are superior! (we have more genetic information than males). He expounds on the origins of illness including cancer and AIDS and ends his tour with the "Evolution with Utopia". This book left me wishing I had taken notes throughout its reading."
