"A detailed historical look at the development of fundamentalism in the three largest monotheistic religions, ending circa 1999. A major thesis throughout the book is the impact of industrial secular culture on the older agrarian religious world views, which then struggle both against the secular "invaders" as well as against co-religionists seen as contributing to the annihilation of the "true faith". Lastly, Armstrong repeatedly returns to the question of whether and how both intuitive and rational ways of knowing/experiencing the world are integrated."
"I first heard Karen Armstrong interviewed on NPR while driving to the airport. Captivating! She is easier to listen to than read! Her knowledge on the major religions of the world is profound! It took me several months to read and attempt to absorb this book and is one that I should re-read again. I find it very disturbing and sad that most of the hate,intolerence-wars and prejudices are centered on religion. "If we imprison ourselves in our dogmatic ideas, we are closing our minds to the divine. The Taoists used to say that it was nonsense to argue about religious truth, insisting aggressively that this could not mean that. What holds us back from an experience of God or the Sacred is our egotism. When we interject ourselves too much into our opinions, we are simply imprisoning ourselves in the ego we are supposed to transcend and making it impossible to have a truly transcendent experience." "Do not praise your own faith exclusively so that you disbelieve all the rest. If you do this, you will miss the truth of the matter. God, the omnipresent and omniscient, cannot be confined to any one creed, for he says: Wheresoever ye turn, there is the face of Allah. Everybody praises what he knows. His God is his own creature and in praising it, he praises himself, which he would not do if he were just, but his dislike is based on ignorance."
"Karen Armstrong writes about the fundamental parts of the jewish, christian and muslim faiths. She includes a history of the religions and why radicals separated to form fundamentalist movements. I highly recommend this book for an indepth understanding of fundamentalists."
"This book was very fascinating, covering the rise of fundamentalism in the three main monotheistic religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The main tenant is that fundamentalism is a reaction by groups of people who become disenfranchised with modernization and attempt to cling the comfort of their more familiar mindsets. These groups feel persecuted and thus segregate themselves. At the same time, the modernization process has promoted the logos over the mythos to the harm, some would say, of the mystical nature of humankind; producing a nihilism, a penchant for barbaric tendencies, and a loss of soul.
I found the Islamic chapters very informative, especially in light of current events. To learn how imperialism and foreign economic interests have worked together to shape the events to how they are today and to realize that this pattern, repeating over and over again, has yet to change. We are still making the same mistakes.
