"This book was quite an eye-opener. The author makes a very convincing case for making drastic dietary changes. It's a shame that his research has been mostly ignored and shunned by most of mainstream America. A lot of this is because of the power special interests have in American society. However, I think the author made a mistake by taking such a rigid view of converting to a vegan diet. That just is not realistic for most Americans, for many reasons. It's like saying that teenagers should abstain from sex until marriage - even if that is the safest choice, it's not realistic for most people. I would say the same thing about his insistence on a totally plant-based, whole-foods diet - if he had been more flexible in his approach, he would probably have reached a lot more people. If Americans just ate a lot less animal protein, and more whole, unprocessed food, there would be great benefit to the environment and our health. Very few Americans are going to be willing to give up meat, eggs, and dairy entirely, but many - myself included - would be willing to drastically reduce our consumption of those foods."
"Well if anyone wanted support for a vegetarian diet, this is it. Colin and his son Tom, weave a dense detailed treatise, showing how a plant based diet decreases and even heals cancer, heart disease, diabetes, macular degeneration. The book is based on Colin's work with the Chinese government in the 1970's tracing cancer with 660,000 workers, since the individuals were all Han with similar genetic background. Therefore differences in rates of cancer could be related to environmental differences which were traced to animal protein in diets to higher rates of cancer. In addition to this study, Colin includes many other studies. Sometimes he seems to dismiss research that questions his point too easily. But he dies effectively make his case, particularly with grafts that almost show a 1 to 1 correlation between animal protein and illness. He also shows that the current research community is not interested in looking at diet, and shows detailed biochemical effects of antioxidants in preventing disease."
