"My only real problem with this book was that i personally couldn't get into it because of the book before it. The plot premise was wonderful to me except my brain kept going hello talk to your sister moron. The whole book before it was about how his sister is unaffected by magic so you'd think that when his wife disappear4s by magic that the only proof he would need to give would be to go have his sister tell everyone that she remembers his wife. The fact that they went all around the world instead of the couple days back to her made no sense to me. And I just couldn't make myself care. I thought they were being stupid which went against everything i believed about the characters."
"Chainfire is the ninth book in the Sword of Truth series (and, if anyone happens to care, is also what the Legend of the Seeker TV series is loosely based on). It's been a little while since I read the last book, and I really have forgotten a lot, though there is a lot of reminding in the book.
This book was VERY slow for a long time. I get why it had to be. Basically, a main character has disappeared but no else, it except for one person, remembers. The last third is when it really picks up. But, I have to say, as a writer myself who loves dialogue, WOW, there was a lot of dialogue in this one. And long stretches of one person speaking. It was ... interesting. This book is also part 1 of a trilogy (yeah, figure that out!), so I wasn't sure how things were going to pan out for the rest of the books, but I see now. I will say I think, mostly the story is better than Book 8, and hopefully the next one proves to have more action and story."
"I abandoned the Sword of Truth series a while back, and just recently decide to give the final three books a go. The series had been great at the beginning, but as it continued into later books, the plot seemed to drag on and spiral away from the main arc into unsatisfying distractions.
The strength of the series has always been the characters--some of the fantasy elements may seem derivative of other work, but the main characters have always been compelling and real. "Chainfire" returns focus to the characters, and the situation of Kahlan's disappearance is handled in a manner much more original than most of the other fantasy elements in the series. While painful at times, it is due to empathy for the characters, rather than a lack in the story. Ultimately, this concern for the characters turns the pages that much faster.
"Chainfire" also plants the seeds for the impending, final climax of the Sword of Truth series as a whole, which is welcome after losing the thread of the story in some of the preceding books."
"At first, and for most of the book, I wasn't a fan of Chainfire. My first problem, was that as I did with each of the previous 8 books, I had spoiled the plot by reading what happened. You can't do this with Chainfire. The plot is pretty basic, so if you even know an ounce of what is to come, it's ruined. You just can't enjoy the majority of the book. But when I finished it I was overcome with compassion that I'd never felt before for Richard. You get to know him as a person so much better in this piece. His grief, frustrations, and most of all his undying faith in Kahlan and her existence. It's completely overwhelming the love he has for that woman, which sometimes I have thought to be superficial. Not anymore. I love how bare he was, and was heart broken every time someone didn't believe him. I just can't wait til he finds her and fixes the world."
