"To Glory We Steer is the darkest Bolitho I have read yet, because a large number of admirable characters (Stockdale, Proby, and Captain Rennie) die during the course of narrative. The plot is different the previous novels in the series because the conflict is between British and the enemy (French, Spanish, American), but also, between mutinous members of the crew and the officers (who also conflict with one another). A large number of the characters (officers and sailors) oppose or work against Bolitho's efforts to deal with the lack of morale, trust, and respect that divided the crew of the Phalarope. This novel contains many interesting scenes showing the conflict between Bolitho and those who oppose, and also, has some excellent battle sequences."
"A really enjoyable book! It had a great, understandable plot as far has these old Naval books go. I liked the characters. They were well fleshed out and believable. It moved well and wasn't too filled with navy jargon. The whole thing with Bolitho's brother was cool and psychologically fascinating (Yes, I'm weird.). The only thing that was weird was when they were fighting against the American Privateer. I had a hard time not cheering when they lost... :)"
"Perhaps the darkest Bolitho yet - things are not sunny for Britain in the 1780s, and it is definitely reflected in this novel. It seems like this may mark a turning point for the series."
