About this title: One of Britain's most well-known cooks describes his personal culinary odyssey, from dangerous encounters with his mother's weevil-seasoned cakes to being harangued by readers who think he deliberately styles Yorkshire puddings to look like a woman's private parts. This book aims to capture 30 years of British cooking and the recipes that we have grown up with since the days when a grilled grapefruit was the last word in dinner party chic. Everyone has gorged on cake mix, endured disastrous dinner parties, and put up with the loved one who can only ever produce burnt toast. Nigel Slater is no ...

"Loved this book and the way it was written...in short paragraphs. Each telling a short memory from his life.
Sometimes funny, sometimes not but always entertaining and kept my interest.
I will read more of his books."
"The subtitle, "The Story of a Boy's Hunger", refers as much to the young Nigel's hunger for affection from his father and for affirmation from his family as to his memories and longings of actual food. There is a sadness to that, and it seems to override the attention given to the food itself, which is significant. I had never read any of the author's cookbooks, so I didn't know where the book was going; the story of his coming of age and making it on his own and learning the food/restaurant/chef's business was interesting. Mostly I liked his descriptions of food and the British eating habits of his family."
"This is a memoir but it is comprised of essays with titles like 'Toast' or 'Peach Melba.' These sometimes ghastly, sometimes delicious essays could easily stand alone, but Slater ties them together beautifully, linking the food of his youth with the joys and sorrows of childhood, family in its many forms, and sexual awakening."
"Mr. Slater supplies a window into his dysfunctional childhood and how the love of food (or the loath of his mother's cooking) kept him afloat. I would file this one in the "tragic comedy" file. It is easy to see why Britain considers him a national treasure!"
