About this title: Although written over four hundred years after Alexander's death, Arrian's account of the man and his achievements is the most reliable we have. "This was written 2,000 years ago and even so it is the best work I've read on Alexander. It is footnoted, which is great, because Arrian is constantly trying to denigrate the ancestors of his political opponents. Alexander's life reads like an incredible movie. The only problem would be that if someone made this up, no one would believe them. Alexander conquers Greece, Persia, Egypt, and some of India. He is a brilliant commander who moves as quickly as possible and is always completely sure he will win. He fights at the front with incredible bravery, and was first man over the wall at a fortified town and personally killed enemy men and in one case, defeated their commander in single combat. His men loved him because he shared their hardships. Alexander is unquestionably the greatest conqueror ever known, and Arrian's account the best of his achievements."
"Arrian had until recently apparently been largely discounted as inaccurate. Archaelogical evidence has been put together in the last century or so that suggest he was giving a pretty close account of the period he covers, which is basically the time from Alexander's invasion of Persian territory until Alexander's death. There are brief passages either side of the main action that cover the time before and after."
