"In Alexander McCall Smith's latest installment, the reader is once again treated to the unfolding life of Mma Ramotswe and the cast of characters that make up the world of the No. 1 Ladies Dectective Agency. In this story Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni has recovered from his debiltating depression and lends a wonderful richness to the storyline. His character as always is understated and charming and we wonder when the the engaged couple will actually get married. Mma Makutsi figures prominently in the plot and not only does the reader get to know her character more deeply but McCall Smith is able through her musings make several profound comments on the state of women in society today. A new dectective who is both arrogant and inept is introduced and it plays nicely in a humorous way against the womens thoughts about their place in soceity. Mma Ramotswe's primary case involves a successful man who wishes to atone for his past errors and in doing so is able to move on with his life. This is easy enjoyable reading, with beautiful prose and descriptions of life in Botswana and thoughts on life that apply to us all. A"

"This book is 4th in the series. A simple tale of a ladys detective agency where everything seems to happen in a laid back manner. Had an old fashioned feel to it.
I found this book a bit dull and didnt feel any urge to pick up to find what happened next. The characters are nice enough but there was no real plot to drive the reader on, just a series of small events with simple resolutions. As the last event concludes the book just ends in a very lack lustre way. Probably aimed at a younger audience 10 plus. Gives an insight into Botswana way of life. But why oh why do you need to address your fiance every time by his full name Mr. J L B Matekoni. Must be a Botswana thing.
Should probably read the first book in the series where the main characters are introduced"
"Another charming tale of ace detective Mma Ramotswe and her friends and family in Botswana. I have come to love each one of these stories in Alexander McCall Smith's "The #1 Ladies Detective Agency" series. Although I found the previous book made some unbelieveable choices for his characters, this one found them all back in top form, with such depth, love, and humor inbued in their personalities, you'd think they could all really exist, solving cases in that far-off, well-drawn desert country of theirs. Although at this point in the series, it does seem as if there is more character development than actual crime solving going on, I dare anyone to read them, and not become entranced by the world of the #1 Lady Detective, Precious Ramotswe!"
"I predicted half of the ending, yet I still enjoyed the story. Which shows the strength of Mr. Smith's writing. Usually, when I figure out the solution to a mystery before the end, it spoils the story for me, or at least I keep looking for the next piece that fits my solution. In 'The Kalahari Typing School for Men' I didn't feel that it spoiled the rest of the book, because I wanted to learn how the author played things out.
I accidentally skipped the 2nd and 3rd books in the series, yet I didn't feel lost. Mr. Smith gave enough back story that I had an idea of what was going on, without over doing it. So I definitely want to go back and read the other books in the series to find out what happened in between the two books.
Mma. Ramotswe is very wise when it comes to people, and I enjoy reading her observations. She is very practical when it comes to her relationships with everyone, and tries not to meddle too much. Yet she does take action when she feels necessary. It's interesting to read how she debates so heavily at one point, but in the end everything works out.
It's a very relaxing book to read, but not so relaxing that you'll fall asleep on it. It kept my interest all the way to the end, without a boring spot where I sat the book down for a couple of days. I wanted to keep picking it up and reading it thought out the day.
